Rumor: A800

I saw someone post a "report" about what he see in JP

Sony A800

  • body design similar to A700

  • 100% OVF (pentprism bigger than A700)

-15.2Mp APS-C CMOS
-ISO 200-6400 expandable to 100 & 12800

  • Quick LV

-flippable back LCD
-6.5 frame per second
-New high speed flash sync
-9 double cross f/2.8 AF sensor (23 total AF sensor)
-New metering and AF sensor with tracking and previous focus
-Dual AF Ultr-Speed motor ??
-Wi-Fi built-in

  • Dual memory card slot CF & MS

  • New battery (again......)

  • A700 grip will be compatible

Others features:
-micro AF adjustment
-full function eyestarter (pre-focus)

I wouldn't post where I found this, since I accidentally make someone got banned by Sony by quoting the post here....and forced to remove all his post from the forum..then disappeared from that forum......anyway, just a rumor.

Have fun.

Re: Rumor: A800

didn't this rumour start here earlier on? haha

Wasn't even a rumour from what I remember but someone writign a wish list. Gotta love these internet chinese wispers.

Love that it says "New Battery" but also says "Compatible with A700 Grip", basically contradictory.

Its a nice wishlist but I very much doubt its anything more than that or speculation. sorry!

FWIW, if the "A800" had a new battery, it could just be more powerful, but still fit in the A700 grip. BTW, I'm not saying I actually believe these rumors. Who knows?

Why is the contradiction ?

The battery could be the same size and shape as the current one, but with higher capacity. What is the contradiction when it comes to compatibility with the A700 grip ?

If the grip works with A700, I guess battery shape and size will remain the same.

Re: Rumor: A800

Well, i just figure there are people already post this and quote the forum out.

And if fact, there was a guy who give out the info of the A350 back then..(you can check my old post if you like) that he playing around and I quote it out here...and he removed all his post from that taiwan forum and disappeared... as I said, it's all rumor until the camera came out.

the matter of to love or hate the wispers, is just which wisper to hear.

The only thing i will question is the 100% OVF that have quick LV and maintain the same size as A700. Other than that, with the financial power of Sony and the brain from Minolta+Sony, I think anything can happen.

Anyway, I just pass by to say hi who stick around.

Not necessarily contradictory. The a800 could be backwards compatible with the current a700 V-grip, but could have a new grip design with a larger battery compartment that is not necessarily compatible with the a700.

The a700's grip holds the batteries on a removable tray, so a redesigned tray could easily handle another size battery. I was told at a SonyStyle store that the current a700 VG is out of production, so I am expecting a new grip anyway. As long as the current a700 VG is compatible with future Sony cameras, I don't see a real problem other maybe taking along two different kinds of batteries.

Re: Rumor: A800

It would be a shame to put such a camera to market...

I am waiting for the "little brother" of the A900 (cheaper FF), not for a big brother to the A700

Agreed, give me an A900"light" with full frame 12mp CMOS and live view, maybe video too.

That's a cool set of features ( less LV... ), but a 15.2MP APS-C CMOS would be the noise trouble all over again ( now that A700's 12MP sensor noise was reasonably fixed by v.4... )!
It would be excellent for FF, though...

With all those features you just as well buy the a900 because the price will be there with it.

mistake

This would be a mistake, imho, given the results of the canon 50d

We're talking about Exmor-R backlit CMOS sensor here which should have at least 3 stops better high ISO capability.

I agree. Sony has to address their noise issue... not that they are "bad", it is just when comparing to Nikon, and especially Canon, Sony gets a lot of flack for its "horrid" noise.

In reality, compared to film, it is "noiseless" almost, but in the digital world today, you have to match the Big Boys, or not be taken seriously.

Re: mistake

In the press release from sony in july 2008 they stated a 6dB improvement in senitivity and a 2dB improvement in noise. How that translates into the real world will be seen. I would imagine 2-3 stops improvement is not unrealistic.

HOWEVER, as nikon have shown it is not just the sensor, it is also the microlens tech and ADC readout that ultimately determine quality. We'll see.

Even if this turns out to be true, Sony still has plenty to improve with their baseline noise performance. As good as the a900 is, it'd be a far better camera if the noise was even on par with the a700, much less the d3x.

wasn't sure but does the new Sony R sensor mean there are no microlenses?

Re: mistake

microlenses overcome the problem that there is dead space between pixels, they allow all the light falling on the sensor to be detected. If in the new sensor there is no space between pixels then microlenses would become redundant. I rather suspect that there will still be some deadspace in the back-illuminated sensor.
