just got my 17-55 is usm last night and am going to take to basketball game today (11 yr olds) figuring to set ap at 2.8 and shutter at 1/60 s (so lights can cycle) for even wb through shots (shooting raw) or would it be better to set iso at 1600 and shutter at 1/60 and let cam decide ap? or option 3 am I wrong in both options and should give up ? lol thanks for help

Even with 11 yr olds, 1/60 is going to be much too slow. You definitely want to shoot at F2.8. I would say you need at least 1/250, and maybe faster. Don't be afraid to use ISO 3200.

should I shoot in sraw1 instead of full raw? with my sons level of involvement he would be blur free in a 2 second exposure!! lol likes watching everybody else while in game but enjoys it like that

I saw this phrase "so lights can cycle" in another thread about indoor sports photography - what does it mean?

Thanks,

lights cycle at 60hzs, simplified the electricity is running back and forth 60 times a second so at 1/60th of a second you would catch one lap giving an even level of lighting for all shots (less work in pp for setting w.b in workflow as all pics taken should be close in wb)

is only a small gym in a middle school, pictures stand a better chance of being limited by me than a partial light cycle though!! lol

My standard non-manual indoor sports setting is:

RAW
AV
F 2.8
ISO 1600-3200 (Try for SS above 500 even for little league)

Try different Metering Modes and check with that new 50D lcd. With indoor action its hard because your not always focused on a bright face or dark jersey etc. with a bright yellow floor and flourescent or tungsten light.

I think the best idea is to try ALL the settings and back at home figure out what worked the best and write it down.
