Cosina 55 f/1.2 shots

.

This lens can be had for about $200 on the bay - one it's become one of my funnest purchases.

The bokeh is often startling and beautiful, if not always traditionally 'smooth'.

DOF is sharp and small, and hard to hit. I love this lens.

(all are wide open at f/1.2)

Those are gorgeous man, I love the color. The bokeh is very distinctive (in a good way). How does it behave wide open?

All those shots are wide open, so you could say it behaves very well!

You can get really whacked-out bokeh like in the following shot, but I actually really like whacked-out bokeh - if everything looked like my FA 50 1.4, it would be a boring world.

Also, there can be a good deal of PF if you shoot into a light source wide-open, but that's true of any lens:

Stopped down just one, it starts to get really sharp:

It does neat things with cascading lights wide open:

wow mc... some more wonderful 'trippy' bokeh from you. I had a chance to buy that lens for 185 NIB shipped and did not because I was thinking I was going to switch to the dark side... I am kicking myself hard right now.

You know how envious I am of your
Where did you see the 200 price on ebay?

something just went wacky with this edit... what I was going to say was you know how envious I am of your Flashback inducing Bokeh, and this lens shines at it.

I love these! My favorite is the golden Christmas ornaments, so rich looking. I actually thought they were splashed water drops until correctly ID'd just above!

These are great shots from a superb lens. Thanks for posting them.

I beg to disagree. Some lenses never exhibit PF under any circumstances. They are usually old lenses with fewer elements or groups (Tessar, Heliar, Sonnar), but a few very sharp modern lenses are also PF free (the Cosina/Voigtländer 125/2.5 comes to mind).

Cheers!

Just bought one ...

Great shots! I just bought one of these 55/1.2's on eBay, mainly on the strength of these shots (narrow DOF is something I love to try from time to time).

Will post some examples here when the lens arrives ....

Re: Cosina 55 f/1.2 shots

Great fun with F1.2 lenses, but I found one problem with my Penax K200d and Porst color reflex 55mm F1.2 - DOF is looking different in viewfinder than in final image, also focus seems to be affected by DOF difference issue....

For example DOF is equivalent in viewfinder and in final image if aperture is bigger than F2.0 which is problematic....

Mine has just arrived! (4 LBA imgs)

Well, my first F1.2 lens, and - crikey - my K10D meter just does not know quite what to make of it! Here's the obligatory LBA post. The first two are at F1.2. The 3rd and 4th shots are at F4 and F16 just to show the lens operating at different apertures. (Apologies for the noise in the F16 shot - had to bump to ISO1000 to avoid camera shake at that small aperture).

Initial conclusion: Seems to be a good fun lens, but the camera's meter 'guess' on the green-button-press seems to vary from being 2 stops too dark (at F1.2) to 3 stops over-exposed (at F16). Lots of work for me to do to figure out why ...
