Interested in Voice Activation for your camera?
1

I wrote a voice control software for the Canon EOS Utility. It allows nearly complete control of the software by voice. Everything from focus and shooting to aperture, shutter, ev, and white balance. It even lets you open Live View and Zoom and access the up/down/left/right buttons on the zoom screen all by voice.

Here's a small demo video I made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpLBy4-WXE4

I see the software having lots of possible uses, two being:

1. For people who test light and techniques on themselves because it will allow them to use Live View and Auto-focus (remote shutter releases don't activate the Live View's auto-focus)

2. For studio photographers so they can take shots and adjust camera settings while helping the subject to pose or even while holding up light modifiers!

I didn't plan on releasing this to the public but if enough people were interested I'd take the time to refine the software and put it out there. I'm a professional software developer so I'd want to make sure to make this a quality app as well as to do some beta testing.

So, would anyone be interested in this software?

Does EOS imply SLR only, or might this work with selected P&S Canon's?

This will only work with cameras compatible with Canon's EOS Utility. The camera has to be connected to the PC via USB or WiFi and operable from the EOS Utility. This software interfaces with the EOS Utility to provide the voice recognition.

Thanks

This software actually requires me to ship a small pixy to you who actually operates your mouse for you. They don't ask for much but you have to feed them from time to time.

i'm desperate for a voice controlled camera!

i am disabled and unable to operate buttons, dials and any other fiddly controls. currently i'm using a samsung galaxy camera, which can be controlled by voice [zoom in/out, capture, take a video], it has a touchscreen and, being android-based, automatically backs up photos to google photos. it also has 21x optical zoom. however, it was released in 2012, the version of android is obsolete, every 2 weeks i have to restore the factory settings. i'm looking for a replacement, but have drawn a blank so far. does such a device exist?

This product looks like a possibility

https://www.tethertools.com/tethering-software/controlmycanon/

https://www.tetherscript.com/controlmycanon/

I can't tell from the webpage if it gives full control of the camera or if voice control is just limited to triggering an image capture.

There seem to be quite a few iphone applications that can control DSLRs over wifi.    And Apple built voice command into the iphone operating system last year.    So it seems like a natural thing that there should be an application that adds in voice command for DLSRs. But I can't seem to find one doing some web searching.

I would love to find out more about it, unfortunately when I tried to view the video it said the video is private.

I commend the idea. I have limited dexterity and I find the buttons and dials on most (read: all) cameras an insurmountable obstacle. I feel excluded by camera manufacturers, who show no desire to make their equipment more accessible.

Please feel free to share my comments. I look forward to finding out more about your project

I've also don something similar. Was using Alexa as a voice interface but found something better.

I'm currently working on the same thing. I have the Canon SDK libraries which allowed me to create a controlling system for EOS cameras and a new voice recognition system that I'm about to link up to it. I was using Alexa originally to control it but I needed something that would listen for commands continuously and not time out.

As a disabled photographer with similar issues as poster bee4 above when it comes to operating cameras, I'd be interested in any progress you make.

I wonder what your level of dexterity is?  I have some (limited) hand function which makes it possible to use touch screens. I ended up getting 2 different cameras for different purposes.  I got a gopro 10, which can be voice controlled.  Its application is quite limited though.  The lens is wide angle and the zoom is nonexistent, the battery seems to heat up quite quickly causing the camera to shut down.  You need to open the battery door to charge the camera (i invested in a door that has a hole for the charging cable, but it's additional cost). Accessing the on switch (located on the side of the camera) can be tricky. On the plus side, I find the gopro app quite good and the quality of pictures is excellent.  I like carrying the gopro attached to my wheelchair, just in case.

For more focused photography i invested in A lumix fz82, which I operate either via the touch screen or the app on my phone.  The app connects to the camera via WiFi, which means it knocks off access to the Internet on my phone, the app is also slow to launch and connect, so you can forget about snapping quick spontaneous pics. It would help if it was possible to delete images through the app, you have to do it the camera or on the computer.  The fz82 has a brilliant zoom (60x), which is great when I can't get Close to the object, and the price was reasonable at £299.  The fz82 might be hard to buy though, as I believe it was released quite a few years ago.

I hope this helps.  Let me know if you would like any more information.  Good luck.
