K20D, don't like cold temperatures?

Ok, I have noticed this problem before with my k20D, but resolved it with taking a few long exposure pictures.

When I'm shooting in cold weather.. like today.. (2celcius).. the k20D produces some strange paterns on the images..

this image, in example:

and here is a 100% crop

Looks like its a bad newspaper print.

Has anyone had any simelar problems with the k20d, and found a fix for it?

Re: K20D, don't like cold temperatures?

It it only in some of the prints? If so it is likely RF interference from a cell phone, or other nearby transmitter. It happened to me when I was by an FM station that was broadcasting out of a truck.

This is vertical pattern noise. I did not know that it could be triggered by cold. I don't know why cold would affect it this way. Could it be that the cold has drained the battery? Or could the camera be defective?

It is a mystery to me.

Re: K20D, don't like cold temperatures?

its to me to..

dont think it is any mobile or RF that do this.. I have taken nature shots in the cold and have this patern show up. It also show up when I use my light setup (skyport trigger)..

But it newer shows up when the air is warm. Really strange.

btw.. can't think it is my memory cards either (tested with 3 cards, same thing). And I use battery in my grip. Both was on full power today.

Grip or no grip

Some time ago heard about similar issues with the K10, it had something to do with the grip. If the grip is off the camera do you see the same issue? Do a search and see if you can get any history on the k10 with similar issues.

Good luck and please post your results.

I am with John on this.I didn't have any issue with my K20D in any weather but the grip proves to be troublesome when used with my K10 last year. Also,do you have the latest firmware installed on your K20 or the original firmware??

I would notify Pentax and ask for a replacement as this is not acceptable.

I would test the new one when it arrives. I will test my K20D in the fridge as this could prove troublesome, I have not been on a cold shoot yet. I am very sorry this has happened to you. Obviously if the problem resolves itself when the chip warms up then its a hardware issue and should be withing the tollerance levels.

Others have said that this is VPN, Its not. VPN is a K10D only phenomenon which I also experience and looks nothing like the stripes you have. Hopefully its something they (Pentax) can resolve. I am so sorry your work was wasted like that. And on Good pictures too.

Re: Grip or no grip

thx.. problem is that I bought from bh, and I'm in norway.. Pentax Norway will demand that I return the camera.. meaning I have to rent a other camera in the meantime.. Heck I earn some good cash with it, thats why I don't have time to part with it.

Re: Grip or no grip

oh well..

flashed my camera again, testet with and without the grip. Same problem, tryed also with 4 different memcards.

best solution for now is to use the live view to warm up the camera.

Re: Grip or no grip

or go to a warmer country, your models would like that too!

I have the same issue when shooting at iso 800 with my k10d.

Checking temperature

The exif data contains the temperature of the camera at the time of shooting. Photome can show this data. This would let you see if there is any correlation between temperature and pattern.

Re: Grip or no grip

I tested iso 100, and DN 200, 400.. same problem.

I guess it should be replaced.

Your camera has a mechanical issue, either shutter or electronics. You are going to need to return it, or you are going to need to send it in for repair.

In the US, we tend to expect a vendor to work with us in resolving an issue. With this said, I would give B&H a call and explain the issue, provide some samples, explain that you are using the camera for paid work, and see if they can work with you on getting you a new camera body while you still have work with the old body. They might want to charge a credit card a deposit, for insuring the return of the defective body, or maybe not. In any event, giving them a call won't hurt.

Thank you
Russell

The pattern is extremely regular, I would guess a defective electronic componant. It will need a trip to the repair shop.
