When will the Nikon 24 mega sensor camera come out?

Title says it all. When do you guys in the know believe that Nikon will come out with a higher res full frame camera? It seems that no one is talking about this here lately. I have heard that they are working on a 24 mega camera. Is this still the latest theory? Thanks , no trolling intended.

probably when it is announced and released!

Couldn't care less. If they do, I would shrug, buy a beer, and start caressing my D700.

Late 2010, that is.

Same here, except for the beer -don't drink.

An alternative answer would be: "when computers come with 5TB HDDs as standard."

Re: When will the Nikon 24 mega sensor camera come out?

Eventually, Nikon will make a high-resolution full-frame camera, because eventually, the market demand will be there. Currently, Nikon's gotta be asking themselves about the wisdom of committing to the expense of bringing out an expensive niche camera in this economy.

Personally, like the other posters here, I don't care. I don't want 24 megapixels. I realize some other do, or think they do, but I suspect their enthusiasm will be cooled when they see the price.

If it's any thing like imminent, the development has already been done.

Since the majority of current 20MP+ FF cameras are in the $3k market sector, it would be strange if the price were to be astronomical.

stitching exposures

Maybe a little bit off topic but just a suggestion. If you really need more megapixels now why not stitch two exposures? With a reasonable overlap, you get 20 megapixels out of a two-frame pano - with each pixel being of a higher quality than the competition's. Of course this does not work for too many occasions but for static scenes it does, and usually I do not think of it.

Funny that so many people don't care. I thought photographers cared about things like that. I believe a lot of digitally jaded people here are just saturated about pixel-peeping, but since Sony and Canon already have hi-rez cameras out there, I think it is a valid question. So far nobody has given a decent answer, except fot one poster who ventured late 2010.

Re: stitching exposures

With Canon, your can - oops, with Olympus, you can. The E-510 and E-520 have such a feature, 'in-camera'. With certain software you can do that too, of course.

But, indeed, very off-topic.

"When do you guys in the know believe that Nikon will come out with a higher res full frame camera?"

if someone who claims to be "in the know" actually knew, they would contractually not be able to disclose what they know until their NDA with Nikon expired.

Anyone who says otherwise is either yanking your chain for fun or profit, or or repeating a rumor they read elsewhere because they are bored.

Don't care about it, but it will open the way so that in the future, lesser bodies will be fitted with high Mp sensors.

I just went through the painful exercise of testing my handholding ability at various focal lengths with various lenses. To be honest, without vr, I find I need about 4x the focal length for reliable sharpness at the pixel level on a d300.

Increasing pixel density in general will dictate faster shutter speeds and higher iso or widespread vr or a tripod. I find vr gains me a stop or two.

I like the idea of ff giving me lower noise with high iso rather than just making up for my shaky hands. So the higher res, which I liked the idea of, seems less important now and more likely to just frustrate my handheld shooting. And imagine how optical imperfections will be magnified as pixel count goes up to and beyond 24mp. (This highlights btw that mf is clearly not only about the sensor but the optics as well.)

Higher resolution is great for studio or other tripod work, but for us mere mortals other accompanying systems will be needed to make use of it in the field.

So my question might be about when a 24mp stabilized sensor will be available (though I won't bother to ask it).

Re: When will the Nikon 24 mega sensor camera come out?

I tend to agree.

I have yet to have a situation where 12 mp wouldn't do the job.

But I will also say that Nikon's next pro camera will most probably not just have more resolution. I think there will be a lot of other things, new features that will make this camera very interesting. Nikon has always been adding more features and value to a camera beside just a better or higher res sensor.

Just a few things that are doable with current technology:

Highspeed HD video recording, pre-recording, super high FPS bursts with mirror kept up for a selectable amount of time. Expanding dynamic range by combining two exposures. The camera takes an exposure of 1/200 second but in reality is takes one exposure of 1/250 and one at 1/1000 (or even shorter) and combines them. This would increase the dynamic range enormously in the highlights. Since both exposures happen back to back the total exposure time is 1/200.

Another possible introduction would be a sensor that provides a small logic for each pixel. Each pixel can adjust it's sensitivity. Another approach is a logic that resets the pixel once it's 'saturated' and counts the number of resets during an exposure. This would increase the dynamic range of highlits virtually infinitely.

This is probably not going to happen in the near future though. It makes a sensor much more complex.

Re: When will the Nikon 24 mega sensor camera come out?

Interesting read, if this is all true!

new format would mean something higher then the 21 MP from canon and lower then the 40-50MP of middle and large format camera's.
