D300 hazy LCD

The other day I noticed that the right side of the rear LCD (D300) was a little redish and hazy. Today I looked at it closer, under a lighted magnifying lamp and was shocked!

There appear to be wipe marks that must have left some residue. Over time this residue on the entire inside of the LCD’s outer covering has picked up something.

I will make it clear, right now. Although the photo sucks, you can see what I’m referring to. This is on the inside of the lcd, not on the lcd protector screen. The LCD is not scratched etc…the camera has never been outside when raining/foggy/ etc.

I sure hope that Nikon will clean this mess up, the body was purchased 11 months ago.

Its not on the inside eventhough it looks like its on the inside, this type of residue can come from fabric softener in your clothes, if you camera is hanging around your neck and the screen is rubbing against your shirt you will get this type of cloudy effect and fabric softener is not that easy to get off.

Re: D300 hazy LCD

I have purchased my D300 this august, and just yesterday discovered the exact same thing as yours. The inside of the LCD monitor has wipe marks that can be seen under bright sunlight, when the display is off.

Yes it is on the inside, no fabric softener, no hanging around the neck.

the truth is I could live with the wipe marks as are they are only seen in weird situations, my issue has to do with the right side (as you view it) becoming redish over the past months and when I review a shot it colors the image.

Then something is really wrong with your display and you should send it in for repair. The streaks don't bother me, the flickering lines typical for the D300 display are more annoying IMO.

Re: D300 hazy LCD

I have the same problem too. It seems more noticeable under bright light but doesn't affect viewing my photos or menu screen. But it shouldn't be there. Poor quality control. They never cleaned the screens when they assembled the camera. Otherwise the camera works fine.

My D300 has the same hazy LCD when strong light is hitting the LCD from very specific angles. Your theory about the cleaning solvent residue from before the LCD was assembled sounds right.

The D700 and D3 cameras has the same hazy LCD in some cases. The Nikon service centres will get busy cleaning many LCDs here before the warranty expires...

Re: D300 hazy LCD

How can it get around the protective screen that covers the LCD.

Re: D300 hazy LCD

Funny I have the very same thing on my D300, I purchased mine when the camera first came out in November. This just pop out a very months ago. I'll send my camera in a few weeks to Nikon before the warranty expires.

Same Problem on My D200

I have the exact same issue on my older D200.

I never noticed it for a long time, (I am sure I would have caught it right off).

However, after about a year of use, It seems like it just appeared. I thought that maybe it was smoke residue from some of the campfires at the reenactments, I had been shooting.

Sorry to see that this is happening to others with their new D300's.
But also glad to see it finally reported.

By the way. I have been toying with upgrading to a D300. I shot weddings with a Fuji S5 and love the camera, but would really like to have the extra detailing power, as the S5 produces some soft images at times.

Anybody recommend the D300 over the S5??
My main concern is "Yes", I almost always use my JPG files over the RAW files.
The S5 JPG files are very good and easy to work with.

Does anybody have both and have any comments on the colors and post processing of either, compared to the other?

Thanks in advance.

Re: D300 hazy LCD

I sent my D300 with this same problem and sent it in for service, after two weeks I received my D300 yesterday from Nikon in Milville, NY. They cleaned the LCD Window and all look great now! They also, CKD Shutter Mechanism, CLD CCD, General Check and Clean, CDK Flash Operation, ADJ Auto Focus Operation, and Firmware Upgrade, (not sure why since I already installed the upgrade) no charge. They also sent the camera back to me next day air! Great company!

I have also had this problem with my D300. I also noticed the issue with the D200, but less so.

Re: D300 hazy LCD

Mine shows the same issue. I will send it in for a clean up after my holiday. Weird, but I also spotted a small damage on the lcd but the protector has not been off once (except for day one, when I put th lcd cover on).
