D60 BLACK GOLD in hand, with pictures!!

Yes, the Black Gold mystery is over: it turns out that is a simple trim package, not an upgrade. There are exactly seven changes made:

1) the box: now has three "black gold edition" labels on it. They are not stickers, they are printed onto the actual box.
2) the neck strap: now has an additional "gold edition" logo on it
3&4) the two strap lugs: now plated with a very shiny golden coating
5) the shutter button: now coated with a soft gold color
6) the mode dial: now gas gold colored icons, not white
7) the D60 badge: now a soft colored gold

Keep in mind, this is a $50 upgrade. I don't view this as a gimick to get an extra $50 out of customers, I view this as a weak effort to compete with the XS on the grounds of style, not features.

I have examined the menus as well as the high ISO settings, and have concluded with 95% confidence that there are no internal changes. The spec table reads identical as well.

Wow that's ugly. It's sad to see Nikon painting gold on a D60 to try to compete

Looks like Nikon has gone completely bananas

This is a really hard one to figure out. Have their marketeers actually decided that people will pay an extra 50 bucks for some gold color? It sort of goes along with best buy and others on their web pages that let you pick certain features or camera types to search for -- one of the options is color --- that must be really important in a camera. Wonder which color camera takes the best pictures?

Re: D60 BLACK GOLD in hand, with pictures!!

When the D60 launched last Spring it was a slightly uninspiring "upgrade" to the D40x that didn't really compete, features-wise, with the competition. Fortunately Nikon have now rectified this with the careful application of gold trim. LMAO!

Prizes to the first D60 owner that asks whether it's worth upgrading to the Black Gold edition

PS Assuming this isn't just a hoax.

This isn't totally uncommon with Nikon. They produced a beautiful Gold FA. And, there have been other "gold" models from Nikon. Just search for them. Here's a picture of the FA. I have the humble black and silver one.

There isn't that much metal on the new consumer DSLRs to gold plate, unfortunately.

I'll go on record as saying that it's really growing on me. I think that it matches the trim on the lens. I REALLY WISH they had turned the 'Nikon' badge gold, this would have tied it all together. I REALLY WISH there was a token feature change, Live View and Video at the extreme end, MC-DC2 support, intervolmeter, and processor tweaks on the short end.

Oh well, hopefully it will drive down the price of the normal D60 a little bit.

Looks pretty cool. I think if I was in the marked for a D60, I'd consider "the gold edition" thanks for the great pics!

Huh?

I'd like to ask Nikon what the h311 they were thinking, when product marketing thought that this would be a good idea?

Wow - I'm embarrassed as a Nikon owner. If it were any other brand, I'd accept it and move on. But probably an idea some VP in Japan had for the US market, let me just say that it's a terrible, completely ugly redefinition, of what was a perfectly good product.

At least the camera itself will still take killer photos.

My $0.02

Thanks for posting awesome photos by the way. Very cool of you.

If I had to define the word ugly to a child, I would probably use that gold FA as a very good example.

Re: D60 BLACK GOLD in hand, with pictures!!

I paid an extra $500 to get metallic silver paint on my car versus the nonmetallic black, white, red, or blue paint. $50 more for different aesthetics on an item is not ridiculous.

There's nothing wrong with any company producing an item with different color choices.

As long as it's clear that the Black Gold version is just a change in exterior design, let the consumer have more choices.

I agree...

If you do the gold, then everything that is now chrome should be gold. Hot shoe included.
And hopefully it's not really gold plated, because it will tarnish in no time.

Not for me, but hey, I've seen it way too many times that someone added gold accents to their cars, for example. So there is definitively a market for something like that. I personally think its.. well... ugly.
