New 1D body info....

Hi,

Was meeting with a mate of mine who has been working for Canon for a while... We spoke over a few beers, amongst other things, about the EOS-1... turns out his job is to perform usability testing now (he used to work in a service centre working on consumer video equipment) I mentioned I was looking at buying a 1D III shortly and he promptly snapped at me, told me I really needed to hang on... after another beer he finally spewed out this:

  • Redesigned AF system! AF points can be visibly seen during servo mode now if you turn it on. he said he hasn't tried that much servo mode but claims it works "just fine". I'd grain-of-salt this.

  • 16 megapixel sensor. He didn't talk about the microlenses and wasn't sure on the design of those. He did say the low light/high ISO was amazing but didn't know the technical details on the sensor's production.

  • Still 10fps...

  • 3" VGA resolution screen with 1:1 pixel view.

  • Still 1.3x crop...

  • 1080p/720p selectable video (still 30fps he seems to think as framerate was not selectable). A Canon wireless mic may be an accessory...

  • ISO range 100-6400 expandable in third stop steps to H1 and H2 - and L for ISO 50. (much like what Nikon have done). He said that ISO 25 was available on a model he had but it had some technical issues.

  • ExFAT support as an option for formatting cards but the default is still FAT32.

  • SD/CF has been retained. One card can be configured for video and another for photos.

  • Same look/feel as the 1D III

He also told me that the prototype/testing 1D IIIs did have a video mode in it however the compression codecs were not mature enough.

He didn't know the deep technical details but this all sounds very promising!

Re: New 1D body info....

That would make perfect sense from canon... the missing camera able to compete with the D3.
Of course it's just chit chatting as far as I am concerned

Does the fact that you joined today and this is your first (only) post enhance or diminish your credibility?

I can think of arguments either way

Ok, this year, or the next one?

Yet another beer and we would have known the date of the new Mark release...

"after another beer he finally spewed out this"

That's an unfortunate choice of words...

Re: New 1D body info....

This would make sense considering when the MkII came out, they came out with the MKIIn with minor changes. Increased the screen size and a few other things.

The new screen and HD video is very possible. So it would be called MKIIIn.

It canon does not annouce it this year, then it will most likely be announced in Feb09.

You have to remember when Canon annouced the Teaser flash site. That of course became the 5DmkII model and if you noticed on the other Canon sites/pages banners, they had what looked like a 1D series model floating accross and you can only see the top of 1/4 of the camera. It was called "See the future of Photography" I don't know if this is an old banner but it did have the 1D body (no dial) floating and now the image has been replaced with the 5DmkII and pros shot cams.

Canon better offer a tasty trade-in for unhappy 1DmkIII users ... by unhappy I mean those who actually need/use AF to take action shots. It's bad enough having the top-of-the-line lemon, it's quite another to know that a fixed version is (will be) available In spite of what was talked about in the Canon house magazine 1.2.3 fixed "one-shot" mode and little else

Interesting first post

And an interesting email provider - ausgamers.com - adds a lot of credibility.

That would be correct for a 1.3x crop of the 5DII sensor pixel pitch. Either an obvious Canon implementation or an obvious guess. Same applies to most of the other specs.

So now that we've exhausted the 5D rumors...

...we're switching to the 1-series? I've heard a rumor that the new 1D will have a miniature microwave oven to heat up snacks during cold photoshoots. Can't say from where I've obtained this information of course.

If he did, would you really want to know?
