Output profile for Nikon Capture NX

This profile does not waist space, nor does it clips colours - it is tailored to cover exactly the same gamut of colours Nikon designed in all current cameras. Profile may need further tuning - please report any issues.

First, you need to install it into the system, then to switch it on in NX Preferences, Color Management and check the box "Use this instead of embedded profile" and relaunch the application.

Thanks for posting, Iliah. I have an issue in using it, though: when I convert to sRGB at the end of the workflow (for posting on the web, etc.), the colors shift rather violently instead of appearing basically the same. Specifically, it almost appears I have changed the white balance several hundred / thousand degrees cooler.

What would cause that?

Can you please send me a jpg with this profile, before conversion to sRGB?

On its way. I sent both the file with your profile and the result of converting to sRGB on my system.

Dear John,

But from the files you sent it looks like you are not converting to sRGB, but instead assigning sRGB to the image. Can you please describe the procedure you use to change the colour space for the case?

Sure. In NX2, from the menu, choose "Adjust, Color Profile". In the resulting edit step, click "Convert to Profile" (default is "Apply Profile"), select the Nikon sRGB profile, use either "Relative Colorimetric" or "Perceptual" for rendering Intent, click "Use black point compensation". Pretty familiar with this process - this is the first time I've ever seen a color shift when using "Convert to Profile".

It appears you've demonstrated it works fine in Photoshop, which I'd already confirmed

I agree the effect I'm seeing is similar to assigning the profile in Photoshop, but that's not what I'm doing in Capture NX2. I'm clearly converting to sRGB and there is clearly a dramatic shift in color when I do. It's either a bug in my installation of Capture NX2 (that I've never seen before with any other profile) or a compatibility issue with the new profile.

Just for grins, here are my screen shots:

After:

Only difference between the two is clicking the "on" button in the Color Profile edit step.

Lets say it was not your intent. Wnat NX is doing for you is a different issue, and it is assigning.

I was not able to replicate the issue in NX1, please see below:

Some OT here

Dear John,

On a slightly different, but probably rather important issue.

There is a reason why I do not make colour conversions in Nikon Capture, and it is because one can't control gamut mapping. In Photoshop you can do that easily, switching on gamut warning for the destination colour space, be it a printer colour space or sRGB or whatever. My conversions between colour spaces 90% of the cases start with converting to Lab space, as for me it is easier to use Lab controls to map the image colours into the destination colour space, using, of course, gamut warning as a guideline.

OK, some sort of incompatibility with NX2. It is even evident with Soft Proofing turned on: if I turn Soft Proofing "on" with the destination space as Nikon sRGB, the color shift is no longer apparent; however, if Soft Proofing is "off", as I usually operate with any other color space, the shift is there. Very odd - it appears NX2 does not "like" the profile - all others, including ProPhoto, Beta RGB, etc., work just fine - i.e., appearance is the same from end-to-end.

Have you tried any icc4 profiles with NX2? Any other Lstar profiles?

No, just the widely-available ones like ProPhoto, AdobeRGB, sRGB / Nikon sRGB, Beta RGB, etc. If you'll point me toward some profiles I could try, would be happy to do so.

I've since confirmed this doesn't happen on my Windows laptop, either, just the Mac
