Canon: new DSLR this fall

According to Swedish forum Fotosidan, who attended a press conference this morning:
http://www.fotosidan.se/cldoc/21293.htm

Translated:

"On a direct question if Canon will go to Photokina without a successor to EOS 5D, product manager Roel Lammers says - "no comment", but marketing manager Magnus Nilsson cryptically adds that another SLR will arrive this fall."

In Amsterdam (The Netherlands) there was a press conference too. The local Marketing Director said the same:

Which translates to:

"During the press conference today in Amsterdam, Hans Smittenaar, Marketing Director of Canon Netherlands dropped a few indirect comments about a 'long awaited successor'. Accoring to Smittenaar we have to be patient for 'a little while', but the camera would be announced this year."

Maybe they are waiting for Sony to make their move.

Not a chance ...

... as it can easily take most of a year to make a major change in design and get it into production.

Re: Canon: new DSLR this fall

i hope the 5D successor will be announced before or at the Photokina,
maybe also at the Canon fall'08 Roadshows which are starting in 2 days
in Germany.

i have translated the 5D News from the Canon press conference in Netherlands

Actually, Hans did not say 'this year'. He only said that we needed to have a little more patience, emphasizing the word 'little'...

Of course, but my guess is that some things, like the amount of megapixels in the final product, is configurable late in the process. I may be wrong, though.

They can also wait for Sony for pure marketing-reasons. If for example Sony releases in the morning, Canon can release in the afternoon the same day and drown the press clips.

7D/5D XX entry FF and a 3D to compete with the D700? That would be my guess.

You know the rumor from the guy who says that he is 105% accurate, who claims that the new body will be 16mp, without live view..?

Well,.....according to what I've heard, that's either BULL, or a "7D" type camera.. a lower level FF body that will sell for 1/2 that of the 21mp body I've heard about in the works, which I've heard nothing about.

Listen to what Max has to say.. He is spilling beans that I have heard from another source which confirms what I've heard about, who isn't his source.

Re: Canon: new DSLR this fall

It's almost a given now that we've seen the 50D.

A new 5D with all the features of a 40D would have fallen short of the D700. A new 5D with all the features of the 50D will knock the D700 out of the park, especially if it comes in at $300 - $500 less than the D700.

My guess: 21MP, 50D features, possibly HDMI video, $2400 street. Clean ISO 6400, ISO expansion to 25600.

Basically all Canon needs to make this happen is a new sensor.

I'd be very surprised if they waited until next year to announce it. If anything they'll release a new camera to challenge the D3 next year, but it's safe to say the new 5D will once again be king of IQ.

The way i read it is that what rootbear has heard matches what max has heard although they have different sources? But this information is different to another poster whose specs seem to indicate BS or two diff FF cameras in the works

Probably more confused now hey?

Go on rootbear, give us something please

OK... so, you've heard of one camera (21MP), the "105%"-guy heard of another camera (16MP)... and Canon Norway says there'll be TWO new cameras this fall.

I guess adding it up:

  • 3D, 21MP, "50D with full frame"

  • 7D, 16MP, no live view, very scaled down, a simple body around a FF sensor

Interesting. We'll see if Canon surprises with two new cameras.

I heard that there will be five new DSLRs and they will all be over 40mp. Plus, they will all have MP3 players built in and an ebay mode that will automatically size and optimize the pictures for ebay. It's confirmed, really.

Or firmware...

Is that a programmable, otherwise useless "print" button I see?

Re: Canon: new DSLR this fall

I think that a must for Canon is to improve the body. That´s what Nikon has done. I really prefer 16 MP with a good sealed body, with AF improvements , than a 21 MP FF 50D. It Canon does, They will hit the Bull.
