next 5D, news from Kona, Hawaii

Canon is having a conference with their dealers in Kona, Hawaii this week. The guy who I got the Nikon D700 from (owner of a camera shop in FL) replied my email question about the 5D:

"Regarding the 5d replacement, as much as I wanted it to be part of our program this week a new 5d won't be announced until just before Photokina in Sept. I don't know the specs yet but we are guessing it's going to be 15-16 mp, faster, with 6400 ISO capability. In other words, an camera equal to and possibly slightly better than the D700. As you noted, the 5d has an unique file that folks think looks the most like medium format film. But, we'll have to wait and see and I will keep you posted. "

Thought some of you may be interested.

BTW, I did ordered a D700 with 18-35mm lens, and want to try out the dark side.

Cheers!

Errr, where's the news? A camera shop owner in Florida is guessing on some specs? This is news? I don't get it.

For the good of the forum, could we consolidate these posts in existing rumor threads please?

I would love to see a "Rumor and Nonsense" forum that all this can be dumped into to keep it out of the typical forums.

Though I think this is one of the most believable out of all of the 5d rumor threads yet - nobody knows, but we have some intelligent guesses but not enough information to make any informed decisions. That's all. Anyone that says they have "the scoop" is full of BS.

Maybe we should install a counter or something.

For all others interested: I'd suggest to wait a few more weeks. Soon you'll be able to get like-new D700's, less than 3 months old, at bargain prices. The time has come when you'll read message titles here like: "I had one but it just didn't fit me", "16 MP are what counts at the end of the day", or "I always preferred Canon's interface" ...

This is so original.
OF COURSE it would be 15-16mp and like wise the ISO would be extended
This is just speculation + extrapolation.

Like one of the follow in posters said, if it is spec'd like this w/the usual functionality & ergonomic upgrades from the 40D, then there will be a sell off of D700s for those that will not be happy unless they have the latest, best perceived gear.

This of course is good for the economy and capitalism and bad for your credit card balance and debt.

Cheers
Dan

To band or not to band is Nikon's quest

For what I have seen so far in the Nikon group, I really don't like the way Nikon handles the blooming in the D700. I was tempted to get one for low light (I still own a bunch of Nikkors anyway), but this feature scares me away again. Perhaps they'll do a firmware upgrade, as likely (from my experience with scientific sensors) it could be the gain is set too high. Of course reducing the gain will have impact on the real iso. It's not all that green on the other side.... Also, the flagship workhorse 70-200 VR seems not on par with FX format as far as I can read on most reviews. Which was really a surprise to me, using my EF 70-200L IS daily, never having probs of sharpness or vignetting.

I really hope Canon sorts out a 5D successor with some features as the D700. I can justify professionally a 5D type, not a lot more pricewise.

D.

5D Replacement

A guy who works at our local camera store is in Kona as well and he made the same statement about it not being released until right before Photokina. He hasn't verified this, but a person on another forum mentioned there salesperson being in Kona and saying again that the 5D replacement won't be out till right before Photokina, but that a 50D and a few P&S would be out on Aug. 26th.

The owner of National Camera in Minneapolis is at the Hawaii meeting as well. No clue as to what they are a annoucing, but Canon is not flying dealers to Hawaii' for nothing.

I was surprised to see some D700s for sale or trade on Fred Miranda. The people trading wanted to go back to D300s.

Mums the word

Everyone is being really quiet. But heard a hint that a bunch of new cameras are coming. A 40D replacement, a 5D replacement and a 25 meg DSR plus a bunch of P&S.

I got the sense from watching the gestures of the person speaking that Canon will show they are still the one to beat and some nice stuff is coming, maybe even overkill, if that's even possible in electronics and digital imaging.

40D replacement

Canon brought the full frame many years ago, the semi-pro full frame 3 years ago, and now I would like them to bring an 'affordable' full frame. The main reason I haven't upgraded my short to medium telephoto is because I always hoped I would have a full frame some day anyways. I figured I'd just 'get by' with the 17-85 (I particularly like this lens, but it is quite slow regarding f-stop). I would also like to get some short primes that for me would be more beneficial on a full frame. If they bring a 40D replacement, and if it were to be priced like the 40D, I would upgrade. Until something like this happens, I don't see myself ever upgrading my 20D (at least not in the foreseeable future).

5d in Kona

There are people here on the Big Island from Canon....for instance gentleman by the name of Lewis Kemper. He is cruising around the Island using a new "high iso" camera etc...in other words my friend is driving him around ...he has a new camera(s) but I will have to wait a few days to hear more details. This is not rumour or speculation..it is FACT...so if you don't believe it...simply go away..don't post some dumb a s s comments about things you know nothing about.

breaking news!

Canon has announced that it new models (across all model lines, 5D, 1DMIII, etc.) will be 6 mpg or less, have plastic bodies (weather-sealed & buoyant), feature a new line of lenses (also plastic) with gun sights on top to assist selecting and focusing on targets. Will hold off on future designs to see how the competition responds.
