L Lens Red Ring Cracked - can it be fixed?

Has anyone ever had the Red Canon Ring Replaced (I know this is vain and doesn't change the quality of the lens- It's a 24-105 F4 lens)?

Is this something I have to send back to Canon Repair?

The red ring only has one crack in it and I took it off. I don't want to do any glue repairs (I'll just make a mess of the whole thing).

I called the number and they were very helpful.

The red ring is part of the barrel assembly and the part alone cost $123.04; this does not including the repair cost.

I think that little red ring it not as important as I once thought!

My lens should now be called the 24-104 F4 B Series (Black) lens - Limited Edition

LOL -

When selling it later, just say it is;

"Customized" 24-104 F4 Canon Lens

ps; sorry to hear about the cost of the red ring. maybe a little red paint will do the trick?

Place a red rubberband around it... costs almost nothing and gives you the option to make it a "limited edition" or "regular" one at will

Same thing happened to me...

...on the same lens, about a month ago. I wondered how it could be replaced without taking the whole thing apart, and seeing what the repair costs, that must be what they do.

I have been thinking maybe a red o-ring might work, but to be honest, it hasn't affected my lens' performance too much. In fact, it seems a little sharper and focuses a little quicker now.

Maybe I should put the broken red ring up on ebay as an "instant L" lens upgrade.

Actually, I was thinking of using black tapes to cover the red ring on my L lens, along with the Canon mark on my camera, in order to lessen attention during street shooting. I would leave it that way.

May I ask how you cracked the red L ring?

Re: L Lens Red Ring Cracked - can it be fixed?

Same thing happen to my 24-105mm lens. I pulled it out of my bag and the thin red plastic ring has a break so soon it came off.

It was a very bad idea, to use crazy glue on the ring. I did not realize that the red ring on the 24-105mm actually touches the rubber focus ring. Thus, once the glue dried, I lost the manual focus ability. I tried to comfort myself by thinking that I rarely use the manual focus ring anyway... but I still feel silly.

Carefully working the focus ring, I was able to eventually break the bond and rotate it freely. Of course after the crazy glue, the red ring will never come off again.

On a different issue, I notice that the rubber weather seal on the lens mount is falling apart... any idea for the repair?

I hope this is not "normal" for this lens.

A fix...

This is what I did when making a pinhole lens adapter for my 1Ds

Gives the whole lens that little bit extra

from http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/Canon_1ds_pinhole.html

Not tried it on the 1Ds3 yet, but that camera is renowned for making your old lenses completely useless

How the red ring broke

I really don't know how it broke.

I've been using my 20D with 24-105L F4 a lot in the last 3 months and suddenly noted the ring was spinning and slide off the track it sits in.

It's been a week now and I'm used to not seeing the red ring on it.

The red rubber band idea is a really good one, though. I might consider having a series of rubber bands:

1. Red; motor sport racing/ego driven shooting

2. Yellow; war related photojournalism

3. Blue: ocean side shooting or when placing in waterproof housing

4. White: weddings and formal event photography

5. Green; still life/shooting flower macro

6. Brown; desert/camouflage shooting

Any other ideas?

Wow, the red ring is ridiculous expansive

at more than 10% of the lens price. I wonder if I canon will sell one for cheaper without the stupid red ring.

Re: L Lens Red Ring Cracked - can it be fixed?

I have it on my camera. I took electrical tape (black) and covered all logos and names on my 5D. I am not sure what to do with the red rings yet but I am looking into car striping tape. The think is, how to clean it up later without using harsh chemicals.

How about red stripe for cars? It would be permanent.

Is there any function for the red ring?

Thank you internet and dp !

The red ring fell offa my 24-105 last night. While online verifying the right placement for my glue job, I landed here. Thank to all of you for great info, phone number (for Monday) and great laughs!

I especially love the L-series pinhole camera and the rubber-band ideas.

I'd love to know if there is any function for the ring besides "steal me, I'm expensive" ?

Does it help keep dust out? Anything?

I am willing to do a micro-surgery glue job (avoiding the manual focus ring junction), yet, if there is no function besides ID, I'll leave it off. I might even hit the logos with black electrical tape...great idea!

If I sell the camera on some future date, I tell the buyer I removed it for security reasons.

So...does it have any function?

I asked Canon if I add an extra red ring to one of my L lenses, will it improve the image quality?

I haven't received a reply yet......

Doug
