Battery life of xsi (450D)

Hey,

I think I am going to buy a xsi (450D) soon. One deciding factor is battery life (over 40D). So how many shots do you get per charge in real life? (Normal conditions, meaning: NEITHER Live View NOR flash on any shot BUT exposure check for a couple of seconds on display after most shots ?

PLEASE DONT quote Canon specs, I already know them. I'd like to get real life first hand experience. Thanks

I did almost 750 photos last weekend with fresh recharged battery. About 200 of mu photos were taken with a flash.

Yep, the battery of the Canon 450D is quite frankly amazing.

I also took a similar number of shots with lots of picture review time too. I don't think I would ever need the extra hand grip with the double battery capability!

I just got my XSi a few weeks ago and have taken 2546 just to try everything out get to know it and im still on my 5th charge with half a battery indicater left on this current charge. so im getting about 550-600 per charge. Btw i have been using my flash for about 350-400 of thoes, and useed live view for about 75-100.

450D batery usage is fairly low indeed. I used 3 lenses that weekend:

  • KIT - 18mm F5.6 all the time

  • 50mm 1.8 II for potraits

  • 70-200 F4L

Camera counter said that I shot 766 photos last saturday. I am impressed.

Backup Battery

You could always order a backup battery just in case.

I have ordered a few from SteringTek.com for my 300D. They work great and are much cheaper than the Canon batteries.

About 400-450 shots with occasional live view, almost no fllash.
The original Canon battery.

There's almost a 50% difference between from 750 to 400 shots.

True, but my shots were over a span of 3 weeks, not in the same dayspan.
Does li-ion battery leak!?
I hear some people reaching 900 shots per charge..!

i took 700 pics over the course of 7 days. at the end of the 7th day, i noticed the battery indicator was half, so i recharged it overnight. over the next 3 days, i took 200 more pics, and the battery indicator stayed at 100 percent (though i realize it wasn't REALLY 100 percent). only a couple of flashes and no live view, btw.

i've been extremely impressed with the battery life. i bought a spare battery when i purchased the camera, based on my experience with my panasonic dmc-fz20 p&s. i'm not sure how many shots per battery i could get, it varied with my 3 batteries, but it was extremely wise to have a spare at all times. the only reason you need a spare battery with the xsi, is if you're taking more than 700 pics in a day. or you're unable to charge overnight (tent camping, but i have an inverter to plug into the cigarette lighter for that).

if you don't mind $50 for a spare battery, it's better to have it than not. but if you're on a tight budget, save it for a tank of gas.

I had several Li-Ion batteries for 9 years and none of them leak.

They do eventually lose charge but retain longer like than Ni-Cd etc.

The key to healthy Li-Ion batteries is to make sure they are chanrged as much as possible. For example, instead of waiting for a full discharge before recharge it would be more healthy to recharge every night.

Re: Battery life of xsi (450D)

I take the camera out to the zoo for 6-7 hours once or twice a week. and. when I get home I will have about 500 raw shots-I do wipe shots along the way too so all in all I probably take 600 shots each session, but no flash, no liveview. The battery symbol will still show up completely black...I do top up the battery before each session, but if I'd let the battery run dry I do think I could get 800-900 shots out of a single charge.

So far I've seen no reason to get a backup, but maybe when the weather turns cold again I still might...

Re: Battery life of xsi (450D)

I mainly shoot portraits, 3 hours at a time, no live view, just shot and check occasionally on LCD. I got up to 700 at one time, occasional onboard flash. I was limited to 705 with my 4GB card, so maybe I could have taken more...

Re: Battery life of xsi (450D)

750 shots are nearly twice as many as 400. So the increase is almost 100%. But never mind. This difference is quite astonishing. After all Canons 600 shots per charge might be true since this lies somewhere in between 400 and 750.

I heard that the life of a rechargeable battery is somewhat determined by the number of recharges, e.g., 1000 times. If that is true for Li-Ion batteries, will frequent recharge shorten their lives?

Re: Battery life of xsi (450D)

I haven't tracked exact numbers, but I'm about on par with what people are reporting here. Very very impressed.

I'm actually wondering if I wasted my money by getting a spare battery! I got it in the starter kit, which has a case I like a lot too, so I may hang onto it. I suppose it doesn't hurt. Assuming it doesn't self-discharge too bad (lose a charge while it's sitting unused), it could come in handy if I'm ever not able (or forget) to recharge after shooting for awhile. Any thoughts?

Re: Battery life of xsi (450D) with a grip

I bought the XSi, used it for a week without the grip and got about 500 shots before the indictor

went below full. With the grip on, with the original canon battery and an after market battery, I have

yet to go below the full mark, even after shooting 1000 shots with a canon 300is F2.8 and chimping
a lot.

I rarely use the flash, and I think I've only tried live view for a couple of shots.

I will get 2 more batteries just because.
I'd rather be ready than be caught short on power.

Re: Battery life of xsi (450D)

I routinely get 1000+ pictures per charge, seldom use the flash, and seldom look at the image in the LCD.
