On the fence about 14-24 for D3, push me over with your pics

I keep reading and hearing about this incredible 14-24 f/2.8. Actually. the first picture I saw by the D3 was the Nikon ad with yellow motorcycle made with the 14-24 @ 14mm.

I am really still on the fence about this lens. It would be very nice to have, but not an absolute necessity. Plus, it's really hard (for me) to make photo's that pop with an ultra wide angle. It would be fun to learn though!

Show me your pics and help me decide!

I am a bit afraid of the distortion, how bad is it?

Hi -- most of these images were done with the 14-24mm, and most of them are portraits. The lens barely distorts at all and is almost perfectly rectilinear. Of course, the perspective is wild...but it is geometrically correct. This is an ultrawide lens, but it is clean enough to work every day with it. As others say, it is sharp wide open, corner to corner, at all focal lengths.

The 14-24 is one impressive lens and has a performance unlike pretty much anything I have seen.

Distorsions seem well under control, renderings are excellent and sharp, very sharp.
And it handles like a dream on the D3

I simply adore it, it is one of my favourite lenses of all times.

I cannot and will not decide for you, but even considering its pricetag I would call it a bargain. never had a lens paying itself back as quickly as this one.

Now those HDR, were they composed of several images or just one?

People can't stand still for several images, is that why the images looks ghosting?

I suspect you tonemapped them in Photoshop, though believe it or not, my own HDR photos here are all 9 pics sandwiched together:

They are all normally about 5 separate images. For the big band shot, I was looking for some ghosting. [Oddly enough, the band moved less during the uptempo numbers than during the ballads.] For other portraits, the subjects did not have as much trouble as one might expect staying still -- for nearly a solid minute in some cases.

Very nice work!

I try to use HDR for any number of different artistic looks, depending on the subject. The shot of Sacha Perry and Ari Roland is intended to look a little like the cover of a pulp fiction novel for example. Sometimes the results are more surreal. Sometimes it is the setting and lighting more than the HDR that makes it look that way.
