40D error message - can't format card

My neighbor has a 40D and is getting an error message that the CF card needs to be formatted. I tried formatting it and got a message saying it couldn't be formatted. I thought it was a bad card so we put in another card and same thing happened. Suggestions?

Hmmm, I was just reading this over at fredmiranda

"Lesson.... Tamron 28-75 is not compatible with the 40D and Extreme III cards in combination."

Does this happen to be the lens?
Slim chance it's the same issue I was reading about, but still possible.

no. In fact when she brought me the camera it was without lens attached - just a cap on the opening for the lens.

Try to format the same card in a computer. What happens?

Try a hard reset.

This will take the camera to original settings, wiping out any "custom" settings.

Remove battery and CF card. Inside battery compartment look for the raised letters "CR 2016" - just below that you will see a ridged tab - push forward a little and then slide out. It's the camera battery that keeps time/date ..etc. settings. Leave out and turn switch to ON. After 30 seconds turn camera OFF and replace the small battery and then main battery and CF card. It should work ,if not it most likely will need to go to service center as mine did.
