Canon EF-S 18-200mm F 3.5-5.6 IS on dutch site

Hi,

According to the dutch website of one of the biggest photography dealers in the Netherlands, there is a

Canon EF-S 18-200mm F 3.5-5.6 IS

coming in September.

news: http://www.fotokonijnenberg.nl/news.php?news_id=1283

product: http://www.fotokonijnenberg.nl/product_details.php?id_product=1351143

On the news page, it says F3.5 to F6.6, but i guess that's a typo.

I searched the Canon Lens forum and with Google before posting this. I hope it's not already posted.

That's a good sign.

coming in September.

I guess we'll see in September then. I hope it's true and that the quality is good... will end a lot of current 'why is there no Canon 18-200?' posts.

This may be THE lens that I'm looking for, now that the new Sigma equivalent turned out to be not as good as I'd hoped.

If it's good, price won't be a real factor. So here's hoping...

Good find, thanks for posting. I just don't see the appeal of such a lens, for me at least. If I'm going to have a one-size-fits-all lens I'll probably just use a point & shoot.

LOL. Must duck...

Gotta watch out for those flying pigs...

Hope it does come out.

Wonder if it'll be priced like a Nikon's or closer to what Sigma would charge. Or, will Canon do the usual and (over) charge $$$$.

Nice thing is that there's super-zooms from Sigma and Tamron already out there. If the Canon version isn't at least as good as these existing lens, it's probably too little too late.

If the Canon's as good as the 18-55 IS was vs. the older 18-55 models, I'll probably buy one.

f/6.6 may not be a typo, given the Sigma 18-200/3.5-6.3 OS.

Anyway, I honestly believe that this is too good to be true (i.e., Canon is waking up and taking on the competition head-on this year). Probably a hoax.

On the product page it said F5.6, which I thought was more likely. We'll see.

Probably a hoax.

I wouldn't have posted this when it was on SOME dutch website. But like I said, they are big (bought some stuff there myself) and a Canon 'Large Format Partner'. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't make this up themselves.

Better than 18-55?

Considering how good the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS are, if this lense is of the same quality, then wouldn't it out right replace the 18-55 IS?

I don't think Canon would do that to themselves. Or would they?? I would replace my 18-55 IS with this one if it is the same image quality. And if 18-55 IS is just a cheap kit lens, everybody would pretty much by default upgrade to the 18-200 IS if it is just as good. So it would actually be good news for Canon.

Therefore, considering the how good the latest EF-S lenses were, I predict that the 18-200 IS will be better than the 18-55 IS in every way, except for maybe distortion.

Re: Better than 18-55?

That is what I am looking for. And it should be lighter as EF-S. If that is true, I will sell my 28-135 IS and get 18-200. Hopefully not more than $500-$600

The Canon maybe like the Nikon and Sony equivalent high zoom ratio lens of jack of all trades and not necessary having stellar IQ quality compared to other optimized lens for particular range say Canon 17-85 Efs IS lens and you have to compromise and adjust shooting styles when using these.

Anyway kudos for Canon in getting the lens that proved popular on Nikon and now Sony side in the inventory. Wished Nikon would do something about introducing a short-medium focal range zooms in constant F/4 aperature chiefly the 24-105, 70-200 and 17-40 L F/4 lenses.

A good EF-S wide angle, something like the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 would be much more appreciated (although the 12-24 is of course a nice lens). It is impossible that lens will be even good . It is just an answer to all those Nikons 18-125 and sigmas 28-200.

What is such lens for. If you wann only one lens, than buy a P&S :-).

I would say it be same speed as Nikon version: 3.5-5.6 efs, 11x zoom and is 4 stop stabilished version.

After making the 18-55 IS & 55-250 IS, they do this???

This make little sense IMHO. Although the 2 webpages seem legit, I just don't understand the logic behind the making of this lens. I thought they said it was better IQ-wise to have the 18-55 IS & 55-250 IS instead of making one superzoom like what Nikon, Sigma & Tamron has done. I think this is a more marketing-oriented product than anything else. They could have just revised the 17-85mm f/4-5.6 (better IQ & less distortion) or made an EF-S 30mm f/1.4 USM. I wonder if any recent twin IS lens kit buyers would feel shortchanged when this lens indeed comes out.

Obviously, don't expect miracles IQ-wise with a lens w/ this zoom ratio. A leader like Canon shouldn't be imitating their smaller competitors with products like this.

I'm not familiar with how things work with official Canon retailers in Europe. They are allowed to leak such information this far in advance?

A 18-200 IS would be an expensive super zoom. Consider how much the EF-S 17-85 IS costs when it came out (i.e., $600 USD) vs. the old 17-55 non-IS kit ($100 USD). There's room for the 18-55 IS in the line-up.

Therefore, considering the how good the latest EF-S lenses were, I
predict that the 18-200 IS will be better than the 18-55 IS in every
way, except for maybe distortion.

There's a lot of reason why a super zoom wouldn't be overall excellent. Probably be more than good enough for people to buy it for the convenience of a huge focal range in a single lens.

As for size; again, consider how big the 17-85 IS is compared to the 17-55. Back when I bought the 17-85 IS, I considered it to be the largest lens I would want as my main walk around lens. Since then, my main setup is a 40D with 17-55/2.8 IS, and so my definition of largest has changed somewhat over the years.
