new cameras

i work for jessops uk and my boss went to the summer conference today, he says sony have started to become very aggressive in pushing sales of their dslr's a sony rep said their flagship dslr would be released in september, nikon said they have two models being released between now and sept, the reason why canon are so secretive is because canon reps have had to sign a disclaimer to keep their product a secret..... but my boss was told basically the 5d 2 would be announced at photokina in sept, but he says sony are trying to take the market by selling their flagship ff 25mp camera come sept. Looks like after september the world of dslr's will change.... hope this helps the rumours...

Re: new cameras, good news,...

thanks, that's good news,... read between the lines,...

Nikon is going to hit, before, that,... so availability is key,...
Sony is going to trump the MP,...and aggressive,... means price is right
Canon is so late, and secretive,... new sensor, + price ?
Pentax/Samsung can not match them, not ready, low volume,..etc,...
they'll be late but usable,...maybe 2009,

went for a root canal,... no LBA for me

Competition Benefits Everyone

Healthy competition in the marketplace only benefits the consumers.

It pushes prices down as low as they can for the market the product is released into and forces many companies to at least keep pace with the most-innovative of the competition.

Along with forcing companies to do better when it comes to quality.

if they compete solely/mainly on price then quality will suffer (ie. Dell, Gateway etc)....... as the DSLR market grows there will be more choices from all the companies and some of the choices will be bad and some will be really good

Just because there are more options doesn't mean that the responsibility of being an informed consumer is any less. More often than not, it's more.

You know, I fail to understand statements like that. Yes, Nikon is producing some really wonderful cameras, especially in the D300 and the D3 and their lens offerings are wonderful.

But the 1DMKIII is very competitive with the D3 at a slightly lower price. For the type of user it is aimed at, the 1DMKIII could be a better choice for some than the D3, though for a Nikon shooter with a bag full of great lenses the D3 is heaven sent.

And the 1DsMKIII is still without competition. At the low end, the XSi is a very fine camera, at least as good as the competition in this market segment and arguably perhaps a bit ahead.

How in the world does this imply that Canon is "playing catch-up?"

Dan

(who is not a Canon fanboy and who is happy to see great competition coming from nikon and sony and pentax and perhaps others.)

You're not the only one. Most of his statements seem to tend to be largely nonsensical one-liners.

You'll get no argument from me on this.

However, how much competition is there in the sensor market, a major component and reputedly a major contributor to price?

I wouldn't say they are in catch up mode, but they are certainly in "let's try to maintain what little lead we have" mode.
