more d3x rumor mill

I was at the US Open in Torrey Pines and I counted atleast 2 Japanese photographers carry 2 black boxes that obviously enclosed a camera. One look to have a WA lens and another maybe something around 70-200 sized. The lens were wrapped in smooth cases as well. I post this on the Nikon boards because the other cameras they were using were Nikon D3's...so a little assumption there.

I was shooting the event for the golf related website.

It's possible that he was using the D3P.

Those are normal cameras enclosed in "camera blimps." A blimp deadens all sound so that the camera can be used in environments where it would otherwise be heard. Without a blimp, you cannot shoot during a player's swing. Even with a blimp, you'd better be far enough away that the player can't hear the slight residual sound.

Looks like some sort of "sound blimp" to me.

Wouldn't a blimp be ideal to hide a 'secret' camera in as well? There obviosly not going to be using a special case with TOP SECRET D3X written on it are they? Saying this though what are the chances that this is one of the guys out testing the prototype?

Wouldn't a blimp be ideal to hide a salami sandwich in as well?

Point is, blimps are not uncommon in these situations, and there's no reason to hide 'secret' cameras in public when companies have many easier ways to test out their gear.

What lens is that though?

I don't recognize that lens. It's not a 70-200, but it looks like it's got AF-Stop buttons and is therefore a pro lens for sure.

80-200 AFS? But it looks like it's got the gold-colored placard near the mount that I think only the 70-200 has...

Cameras capable of making great photographs have become commonplace these days, but photographers have not. While technical innovations have made photography ever easier in recent decades, the art of producing images that other people will care about has become even more formidable. Galen Rowell

Many Japanese photogs dumped the previous AF 80-200 as soon as the AF-S version came out.

But who wants to hide a salami sandwich?

Re: more d3x rumor mill

Why should they hide a D3X? I guess a D3X prototype in the field would just need to leave out the X printed on the body, so everyone would see it as a D3.

That enclosure on the photo looks like a blimp and in that golf environment it makes good sense. That other lens looks like the 80-200 and my guess is that guys that test cameras for Nikon would always shoot with the latest lenses, wouldn't they?

Cheers,
HM

Who wants to hide a new camera when it could be (and it) tested in innumerable locations without the chance of being photographed by some tyro?

You didn't answer my question.

It's a rhetorical question -- and it's your answer.
