On occasion it's taking two minutes to respond. (From San Jose, CA).

My pipe is fine (DSL upload/download test to UK server)

It very often takes ages for DPReview pages to load on my computer. While waiting it usually says "waiting for ad.doubleclick.net".

This has been going on for quite a while already, not only with the new server.

I wonder what this is and how I can get rid of it.

My connection is 5mb/sec (download) broadband.

Alan, I have noticed this too. It's been happening for months...not really sure when it started?

What I notice is that if I click on all the posts in a thread, about every 6th click the delay is V E R Y long...measured in minutes! Most posts come up quickly. I see no messages to indicate that anything is different when the V E R Y long delays happen.

All the wait times are less with the new server, but I still get the occasional V E R Y long wait!!!

I noticed the same thing here (Slovenia, on a broadband permanent connection) and it has been like this for a long time now. Most clicks result in a rapid response, but sometimes there is an annoyingly long delay (but less than a minute), usually associated with the "waiting for ad.doubleclick.net" message that somebody mentioned. I think it has been like this since about a year or so ago.

From this trace, it looks like your connection starts to fall apart in the 9th step (124ms for the first packet in Muskegon, MI) and continues to have troubles for each step after, especially when it goes through Madrid, Spain. This looks like an ISP problem for the backbone that you are connecting through. It may very well be that your next door neighbor is connecting with a different ISP and getting a quick connection because he isn't having to route through the trouble ISP connections in Michigan and Spain to connect to the dpreview forums.

164ms for a transamerican-transatlantic hop (I don't know of any arctic fibres) seems fine to me.

That's not explaining the 120,000ms (2 minute) hangs.

What do you mean "dog slow?" Dogs are fast. I am not talking about just greyhounds either. It is tough for even world class sprinters to outrun the average dog. Perhaps you should have used snail or molasses as comparison instead. :)

Two minutes is a long time, so it is probably something wrong. Perhaps your compture was infested by virus or spyware.

I don't dare offend snail lovers, either.

I don't think so, because it's intermittent. One click and it's instant. Another and it's two minutes. I've looked at Task manager and nothing special is going on that I can see.

I'm trying to find an analyzer plug-in.

OK : firefox is taking 136 secs to get to the site.

Depending on what blocking I'm applying, response time is usually between 600ms and 1.5 secs. But every 'so many' clicks I get a multi-minute wait.

Is the problem

a) on my CPU

IBM Intellistation Pentium 4 1.5G Ram, XP Pro SP3
Firefox 2.0.0.6 with Firebug 1.05 and Load Time Analyser 1.5
Currently running Windows firewall.

b) in my DSL/DNS/Internet pipe

1G LAN connection to a Linksys Firewall, 10MB to Motorola DSL router (bridged)
750/380 DSL connection (see my traceroute and bandwidth tests)

c) At dpreview's end

????

For this particular 'hang' Load Time Analyser reports :

Duration 136078ms

... once it STARTS the download everything is fine, as reported by Load Time Analyser AND firebug.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also installed firebug, and had a similar event when BOTH were running.
(186 seconds!)

Load Time analyser reported the initial delay, Firebug only started reporting when the data started coming down the pipe.
