What is a Zoom Key in a 24-70L ?

I posted this in the Canon Lens forum but no one knew.

Just had my 24-70L repaired by Canon and they stated that they replaced the Zoom Key in the lens.

Does anyone know what a Zoom Key is ???

I have sometimes heard the cam that links the zoom control ring to the movement of the zoom elements called that. Not sure if that is what they mean in this instance though.

I don't know for sure, but it might be the piece that allows the rotating zoom ring to engage the internal mechanism that moves the lens assembly axially.

I couldn’t take it and called Canon. It took 3 different people before I got an answer. It is in fact the cam the links the zoom control ring to the movement of the zoom elements.

I guess that explained why the lens was out of focus worse when it wasn’t zoomed out.

Thanks for the help!
