Canon 1DMkIII update

The US Navy have just been informed of a new firmware release for the Canon 1DMkIII. It will be available by the end of the week, and resolves all AF issues and also includes some other enhancements for the end user.

Thanks for info, navyphot. I have 2 questions however...

1) What is your source for this information (not doubting you, just curious)?

2) What reason would Canon have for letting the US Navy know about this firmware update, as opposed to letting sports news agencies know about it instead?

Thanks.

I was just wondering the same and think this might have something to do with navy safety procedures regarding any new piece of software entering any equipment used by navy (army and air force as well) must be checked against any spying or otherwise "bad" code insight.

What if navy starts shooting without perfect focus and suddenly the target drags his D3 gear and shoots the navy service man first ?

I hope it adds back.....

...total shutter actuations in the EXIF data! Of course, I hope it improves AI Servo AF!

P.T. Barnum comes to mind right about now (even if he may have been quoted incorrectly).

Re: wow - It is true ..

It is not a troll. I sent my 1D MarkIII for an AF issue last week to Canon Italia . I had a talk with one of the responsible of CPS Canon in Italy; he told me that a new firmware was in release to the end of the month (April). He also told me that I will have my camera back with the new firmware installed.

Is this the N model release news?

By now the "N" should be on its way....

Re: Is this the N model release news?

obviously you dont get it, there wont be an N model.
if the firmware update is correct, just be happy with that.

Get out of your head the idea of a 1DMkIIIn camera, cause its not going to happen.

doubt it

I doubt Canon spent all this time fixing the AF issues if it was to be phased out in a few months.

1DIII needs fixing

even if an n model revision is on the way.

If they can't fix the 1DIII, they are going to need to replace a lot of users cameras with the upgraded model. Better (IMHO) to issue a final fix or patch hopefully producing "adequate" user satisfaction, then nove on to an n - if they think that there is still a future for 1.3x crop sensor high speed press cameras.

Yes, I highly believe the N model is not going to happen.
