40D Focusing issues..

After about 10,000 pics on this new camera there are only about 100 that are tack sharp, others are acceptable to soft. Liveview proves lenses are sharp.... any thoughts...

That's a lot of trial and error to reach that conclusion. The way you phrased it, no informal but purposeful testing was done. It's probably best just to send the gear into Canon, with some example images, for them to assess and adjust your gear.

I'd suggest first taking a bulb blower to the AF wells (put the camera in sensor clean mode, remove lens, and look for them at the bottom of the lens mount chamber). If blowing them clear doesn't help. . .

I have just under 5000 exposures & have no complaints about sharpness, any not sharp are my fault. It sounds like a trip to Canon service for calibration would not be a bad idea.

I could be facetious here since you don't exactly give a lot to go on.

Give us some more info... for example, were you focussing manually or automatically?

Re: 40D Focusing issues..

I just upgraded from 350D to 40D, and I am disappointed.
The 40D has the AF issue with all my Tokina and Sigma lenses.

Apart from my Canon 18-55 kit lens (350D), the 40D just could not focus correctly with all my lenses, which have been working properly with my 350D.

I just got a replacement (Firmware 1.0.5) yesterday and the replacement still has the AF issue with all my lenses except the Canon 18-55 kit lens. With the replacement, only the center point of the 9-point AF sensor can focus properly. The AF of my 40D just cannot work correctly at Automatic Selection Mode or single AF point mode with AF point other than center..

I will update the firmware of my 40D to 1.0.8 and try. I just hope that the AF issue is not due to the new 9-point cross sensor and the problem can be resolved with the firmware update. If Canon does not solve this AF problem for my 40D, my next camera should not be a Canon.

Thats pretty strange, I have 17-50 f2.8 Tamron & 150 f2.8 Sigma & have no problem. I have not updated the formware from 1.0.5 yet.

My Tokina 12-24 is perfect on my 40D, I have not done the firmware update. In your testing, have you put the camera on a tripod and used a remote cable or timer with MLU? This is the test I normally do to rule out shaking and user error.

Please post some samples if you want any meaningful help and advice.

And, after well over a day since you're original posting, and still no response from you to other members' suggestions and queries, I'm assuming you've lost interest?

I've taken about 9,800 shots with my 40D and some that were good, some that were very good and only 1 that was so sharp it would knock your socks off. Liveview shots proved the lenses are excellent. See samples at http://www.eyefetch.com/profile-images.aspx?user=eddies&view=popular

????? at 200 shots a month how did you read 10,000?

some nice shots at your gallery

Technique!

Likely technique and/or user error.

What lenses?
What aperature/shutter speed?
Handheld/tripod?
What subject matter -action/portrait?
etc.

Hard to respond to questions like this when you supply no info and no examples.
