K20D & Tulips (with 31, 85 and 200 primes) (Large Images)

Hi everyone,

Just before the rain started to hit Beijing on Sunday, I took my family to the Zhongshan Park where there was a spring tulip festival going on. My son had some play time while I used my K20D to shoot the tulips on a cloudy day. The lighting condition was easier than last week when I went to the Beijing Botanical Garden, with much less harsh lightlight conditions. Instead of lugging around the FA* 80-200/2.8, for this trip I brought three prime lenses: the FA 31/1.8 Limited, the FA* 85/1.4 and the FA* 200/2.8. All three lenses have exceptional bokeh characteristics and it was great fun using them one after another.

As my previous two posts, in order to show the amazing detail of the K20D, I am linking some large (1920 x 1280) JPEGs that were converted with Silkypix 3.0.18.3. Some of the images were cropped and I have to say the K20D's 14.6MP pixel count makes cropping a lot easier as I still got tons of detail left even after heavy cropping.

Hope you like some of those and I apologize for the large file size.

Firstly a few shots with the FA* 200/2.8.

These following were with the FA* 85/1.4.

Now let's see the FA 31 Limited ones, the first one was wide-open.

Enjoy!

In my reply I'll post a few people shots to accompany these.

Peter

Some people shots

Now for some people shots. The cloudy weather did not favor skin tones here and I wish the sun would be a little brighter.

These two with the FA* 200/2.8:

This one with the FA* 85:

These two with the 31 Limited, I used the internal flash for fill-in for the first one:

Hi Pete, as always I love seeing your images and the family photos.. my wife always joins me to see how your son has grown (because his age is quite close to my older sons). I especially like the one with him walking between the tulips. A very special photo indeed!

Just spectacular, Peter. Looks like the K20D works flawlessly with older lens designs.

It's my pleasure sharing my images and especially some family photos here with friends like you. My son will be five years old a month from now and it's incredible how quickly time flies. He's becoming increasingly impatient when I ask him to pose for me and I hope this doesn't get worse.

Hi Pete,

Those are fantastic photos. I am very pleased with that because I am a very recent owner of a K20D,(I still have my MZ-S and Super A) and I have the FA* 85 and 200. They made an incredible partnership. I really hope to get from them something at least close to what you did.
Best regards,
Manuel

They're all lovely but my favorite is the shot of your son with the red tulips in the background.

Unbelieveable - Stunning!!!

WOW!!!

I looked at the flowers and thought, "These are brilliant". I then looked at your familt photos and was completely blown away!!

These are the best examples from the K20D that I have ever seen! Every photo of your wife and boy are EXCEPTIONAL !!

The compositions are fantastic, but the resolution is frighteningly good and the other thing I find quite amazing is the bokeh and film like appearance of the background. Skin tones are superb and EVERY nuance of hair and clothing is reproduced perfectly.

I simply CANNOT FAULT these photos - although maybe you could have cloned out the white flecks in your son's hair. Send them to Pentax to show them how fantastic the K20D and the FA lenses are when combined. This should convince them that there is absolutaly nothing wrong with the lens designs of the FA lenses.

I may sound over exuberant about how good these photos are, but I believe they STUNNING !!

Incredible. If the DA* 200 is anything like the FA, I need to have it.

Thanks! The DA* 200 shares the optical design of the FA* 200 so they should be very similar in character. The DA* should have newer coatings and the front element should feature the SP coating. If I had not purchased the FA* I'd definitely pick up the DA* now.
