Re: D3X will never top the D3...

Only hope D3X has flash sync of 1/500 if not 1/1000 and min iso at 50.

Screw the math!

I want one...with the same ISO sensitivity and quality and with full 9fps shooting

Re: Makes sense, I bought a D3 yesterday...

Before I bought the Nikon I thought to myself what would happen if Nikon announced a d3x. My personal answer was that one big reason for me to get the D3 are the high ISO quality.

For my part and print size 12MP are good, and I would not want to give up high ISO for resolution. So D3 works good for me, I dont need a D3x (I could see how others could prefer a D3x though)

It's not there by mistake

it's called marketing, now people talking about the D3 again.

LOL

I studied marketing...the most unlogic thing I read, in context to this firmware code (^^)

People are talking about a possible D3X again, not the D3.

Cool! Here's a prediction...

...what the noise will look like @ ISO 3200 if you downsample from 24 to 12 MP :-)...

(D300 @ ISO 3200 downsampled from 12 to 6 MP):

Looks to me this 24 MP camera will double as a very decent high iso 12 MP camera (surely not as good as D3 though).

Different sensor

The following strings are in the D3's B-firmware file v1.10, starting
at offet 3'614'640:

6048x4032 24.4 M

Comparing this to the Sony announced commodity sensor:

  1. Total number of pixels 6236 (H) x 4124 (V) approx. 25.72M pixels

  2. Number of effective pixels 6104 (H) x 4064 (V) approx. 24.81M pixels

  3. Number of active pixels 6096 (H) x 4056 (V) approx. 24.73M pixels

Also this D3(X) firmware resolutions include the 5:4 aspect so I am quite confident it's a custom built sensor to Nikon's specification instead of that commodity Sony sensor.

Also in the rumor mill is a cheapo FF body in the work.

What has Sony got to do with this?

I was under the impression that the D3 sensor was produced by Nikon, and the D300 sensor was Sony's doing.

Can anyone clarify that for me?

Re: 24.4 MP Nikon D3X DSLR on the way?

Now wouldn't it be an interesting option for Nikon to provide an upgrade to the 24.4 mp utilizing our existing D3 bodies.

Hmmm.....nah....not going to happen.

Sounds good. The more Nikon takes control over their sensors and image processors, the better, IMO.

Also in the rumor mill is a cheapo FF body in the work.

Now that's something! Keeping my fingers crossed they will get one of these babies on the streets before I'm tempted to get a D3

For me, the D3 sensor in a F6-like body, would be perfect. If there's a 24mp D3X coming along, Nikon might feel it's safe to port the D3 sensor to a smaller and cheaper DSLR, with a slower framerate. And that's just fine by me

Thanks, and I'm hoping you'll keep us updated if you get any more details you can spill, jeff-c.

Thomas.

Actually 2..

The rumour mill (well a Japanese one...) says there are 2 in the works, a competitor for the upcoming replacement of the 5D

Ahh, too bad, Nikon! Canon firmware is encrypted! They should start doing it from now on. It is a way of not only not leaking this kind of information, but you can disassemble the code and insert a new firmware to the machine... Not bad from hackers' PoV, but not too good for Nikon...

diego.

It'd be impressive if the D3 could be both a 12MP low light/high fps and a 24MP good light/higher resolution camera as an menu option.

When I was studying marketing we found out that this kind of intended mishaps (just like controlled leaks) are fairly good way to get attention from certain groups.

I'm not saying this was intentional from Nikon, but it would not surprise me if it was.

On the one hand...

...both of those products make sense. On the other hand it doesn't fit well with the official statement that they won't be trying to compete with Canon in every niche...

Re: Actually 2..

Entry level FF with a 20mp sensor? God damn.

I wish I knew someone at Nikon so I can ask them, what camera should I buy next year to get a FF sensor and a good IQ from ISO100 to 6400. Canon? 20mp would be such an overkill..

guess we'll hear more during Fotokina

I heard it may have in body stabilization.

I don't know if that is true, could it be coming from Sony?

Re: Actually 2..

Yep we will find out I still reckon that a 25mp D3x with same D3 body, AF and slightly slower Fps will come out this year and also a D300/D10 FF next year with the same D3 sensor; slower Fps, maybe cutdown AF & feature set.

Would be nice if Nikon took the Canon sRaw feature and extended to vRaw it so you can define a predefine size, e.g., 6,8,10,12, etc. I use sRaw with my Canon 40d for some quick sketchie shots to build up in montages in Photoshop very handy feature.

How much would you pay?

for a firmware update to turn your D3 into a 24mp D3x?
