24.4 MP Nikon D3X DSLR on the way?

It doesn't seem to me that the Olympics would be a concern for this
camera. I'm not imagining it to be a great sport shooter like the D3.

Unfortunately, firmware updates don't increase MP (if only life were that easy :-). Firmware updates can fix some kinds of bugs, and add or refine some operating features, but MP is part of the basic sensor design.

Ok hands up...which one of you has a D3 with a 24.4MP sensor in it?

But I think he was referring to Kodachrome.
I got a Nikon camera, I love to take a photograph.
So Mama, don't take my kodachrome away...
Well, "Sony chip" has three syllables, just like "Kodachrome", but it would really ruin the song. Got to be a camera word that the person on the street will know.
"Cam-er-a" is probably about as good as we get.

You cannot buy for the "latest and greatest". You simply have to make such major purchases based on actual need. Otherwise you will "always" be behind. The D3 is looking more and more like the low light speed machine Flagship many initially claimed it was and the D3X (apparently named confirmed now) will be the high resolution "all around" shooter. Nikon stated in a writing from Japan last fall that the new era would involved 2 flagships models as well as keep the DX line viable.
There really shouldn't be any frustrations over this one. Even if the D3X arrives tomorrow, no time factor was needed here as Nikon obviously intended for their 2 flagships to be designated as they are. Unlike the old days of the D1X replacing the D1 and D2X replacing the D1X. Or even D300 replacing the D200. Time was definitely a factor in those situations to not kill one model with another.
This is entirely different providing us with 2 flagships and covering all bases.
Exciting times for sure!
Now I just pulled the trigger on a D3, so of course Nikon is going to come out and top it the next day
Hoah there... hold your horses... yes, I saw the but just in case anyone else takes this seriously... I don't see Nikon 'topping' the D3 any time this year. The D3x will probably be a different kind of beast for different purposes. I haven't bought a D3 waiting to see the D3x and its design tradeoffs first: MP / Noise / high ISO performance / cost... then even though I am a nature photographer I may still decide to buy a D3 anyway, since I like to shoot in low light...
I came across an asian discussion/rumor thread couple months ago, through google english translator and far as I can remember, it says D3 has a 24MP sensor in its body, only disabled via circuitry by Sony on Nikon's request to come out with 12.1MP, for superb high iso IQ and 9FPS FX.
I was laughing my way out....but now, who knows!

What are you saying -- that the D3 already has the potential to be
24.4 MP? That each of it's photosites is actually two photosites
(grouped together electronically now) that can potentially be
separated functionally with a future firmware upgrade? (Didn't Nikon
functionally group several individual photosites or something like
that in one of the D1 vintage cameras?) Or do you think the firmware
we just got for the D3 is planned for use on a future model that has
24.4 Meg photosites?
I guess I'm wondering what you think the significance of what you are
pointing out really is...
'I believe that the electronic image will be the next major advance.
Such systems will have their own inherent and inescapable structural
characteristics, and the artist and functional practitioner will
again strive to comprehend and control them.' -- Ansel Adams, 1981
Of whether or not this current sensor will be configured to be a DX model D3X instead of what we are all expecting to be a FF or FX model? That maybe the code hasn't been jumbled after all and in fact the current sensor was originally meant to be multiplied somehow. DX models have their high points. Yet, the other side of the coin is that the D300 takes care of the DX line and why would Nikon "seemingly" go backwards now after having very successfully entered the FF arena?
Just some thoughts to consider perhaps.
Same here, I bought the D2Xs for shooting the local concert just one week before Nikon release the D3 and I can't return due to the actuation count more than B&H allow Just one night I had over 1000 click
I just got the D3 last 2 days and now there's a roomer about Nikon D3X, I guess we just buy the tool for the job, not the latest and greatest stuff.
Just because the D3X has more mexapixels, does not make the D3 inferior, or "topped."
They are tooled for different uses. The D3X will not be able to shoot in low-light like the D3 can. The D3X will not be able to shoot as fast a rate as the D3 can. The D3 will not be able to print as large as the D3X can.
So just buy both. ;]

It's still no more true than it was yesterday. Which is not at all.
The math just doesn't work out. It wouldn't double you from 12 to 24. The D1 is the perfect example. This had the same thing that the asian site claims the D3 has. The D1 was 2.7mp. The sensor itself was natively 10.8mp. 4 times.
2000x1312px (D1 image) would become 4000x2624px for about 10.5 effective MP.
So for the same thing on the D3, it'd be 4256x2832px becoming 8512x5664 for just over 48MP.
The D1x used rectangular pixels and a strange algorithm to go from around 4000x1312 to 3008x1960px. To do that with the D3, you'd go 8512x2832 and then interpolate it down to roughly 6384x4248, which would be around 27MP.
Terminal case of Lens Lust.
Could be the numbers there simply so that the D3 will be able to display any D3x image which happen to be in the card? I think for example D3 can display D300 images in the CF.
