May be a future hack could convert a D3 in a D3X?

Re: 24.4 MP Nikon D3X DSLR on the way?

What are you saying -- that the D3 already has the potential to be 24.4 MP? That each of it's photosites is actually two photosites (grouped together electronically now) that can potentially be separated functionally with a future firmware upgrade? (Didn't Nikon functionally group several individual photosites or something like that in one of the D1 vintage cameras?) Or do you think the firmware we just got for the D3 is planned for use on a future model that has 24.4 Meg photosites?

I guess I'm wondering what you think the significance of what you are pointing out really is...

I found references also...

I just opened up the file and began searching for references to 'D3X' and saw some of the sizes that you mentioned--including the 6048 x 4032 size...

It can't be too long now...

Re: 24.4 MP Nikon D3X DSLR on the way?

I'm not sure who's questions were for, but the strings come straight out the D3's V1.10 operating system (B-file), as for example "6048x4032 24.4 M". Someone typed those string in the firmware, and he/she probably did it for a good reason.

It's all over the place in the D3 firmware update!

Finally some substantiated rumors

That is a clever find. This also indicates that the D3x will use a variant of the Sony sensor which has a very similar resolution.

For those asking what a reference to 24.4 MP should do in a D3 firmware:

The firmware for the D3 and D3x almost certainly will share a lot of code. Nikon most likely therefore maintains a common code base and creates branches for both cameras (in the case of the D3x for the early prototypes). At some point the did not bother to separate the code.

Re: Canon is warned ;)

First the D3 tops the 1D III, now the D3x about to top the 1Ds III....

Interesting times.

Paul Simon needs to re-release his song.

Sure. But the real reason is almost certainly that there are some D3 bodies out there with the new sensor being tested.

Re: 24.4 MP Nikon D3X DSLR on the way?

That's a real brilliant find! Congratulations. Amazing to know now that it will exist, will be 24.4 MP, and be here probably rather soon. On the other hand, could Nikon ignore that by posting the firmware they were likely to reveal the information? Amazing, really.

It's quite funny. I was thinking while writing my previous message about Thom Hogan, and wondering if he would get the information fast and report it on his site. Well, he was already there. 4 minutes before me. Congratulations Thom! And waiting for your D3 book. I'll buy it for sure (I have the D300 on order).

Makes sense, I bought a D3 yesterday...

Sigh

Last year at this time I couldn't wait any longer to jump into a pro body and jumped in with a D2Xs... six months later, Nikon announced the new end all be all of DSLRs.

Now I just pulled the trigger on a D3, so of course Nikon is going to come out and top it the next day

I'm not bitter. But you guys should start pooling money for me to buy a new body any time you want to nudge Nikon on to one up themselves!

Re: Canon is warned ;)

Let's hope the 24mp model would cost like US$7000-8000. Then the balance of the force will be even out by a lot.

there are undoubtedly d3 bodies running around testing sensors just like there were D40 bodies and probabaly D300 bodies and all kinds of things running around being tested with different sensors

i just don't think you start putting stuff into a major baseline releases just to test a couple of cameras -

however, if you are really going to be releasing a D3X in any quantity for the summer olympics you had better be finalizaing production, if not already started, now

Yes. It is very rare to see a vaporware camera that just might be released in 2008 from one manufacturer to have a 7.7% higher linear pixel count than a camera that has been available to buy since late 2007 from another manufacturer. Thank you for pointing a link to this thread on the Canon 1D/1Ds/5D forum.

Kind regards,
