Focusing accuracy improved after installing 40D firmware 1.08

I used to having small soft focusing issue with my 24-70 f2.8. But after 1.08, I found the result of my 24-70 became much sharper. Can anyone to confirm it please?

jsy sent my 40D to canon for calibration actaully...wonder if they'll update it to latest firmware meanwhile?

My guess is: Yes.

I think Canon updates to the latest firmware any time they have the camera in for work.

So I suspect you'll get it back with 1.0.8 installed.

This is all depends, I had sent my 3 cameras for service in the last 4 years. They never updated the firmare once.

My 24-70 is the only problem that I.m having. I am not sure if this update will affect other lenses too.

Focusing accuracy improved after installing 40D firmware 1.08, also with 70-300 mm

I was also pleasantly surprised by the fact that focussing is more accurate after the update. This is just after a short session with my Canon EF 70-300/4-5.6 IS USM, but it was so clear that I Googled on the sumject and came to this thread. Canon is not specifically clear about this, but there must be more on this update than officially published.

Canon will update your firmware, unless you specifically

tell them not to.

They didn't update mine at all.

Wishfull thinking. Probably.

Typically, Canon mentions everyhing that is in an update. If they had improved focusing, they would shout about it to attract new customers who were concerned about focus problems, and not have it as a hidden update.

I think that the problem is the almost all the focusing issues are in the eyes of the shooter - once you hear there is a focusing problem, it is easy to find shots that prove it even though the focus error in those shots could have been anticipated by the way they were taken (I fell into that trap). Now that you think focusing has been improved, it is easy to find sharp shots that prove it too!

Hi Jeff!

I have been trying to see some "focus issues" - i have not found any and i have had an unpleasant suspicion sometimes (only sometimes after reading this forum) - that i can not look.

I almost started to upload the latest firmware to reduce "issues" that probably do not even exist.

This tech forum gives interesting insights to human mind...

Thanks

I thinks so too. I read the list of what the update does and could not find any mention of AF - or anything else that interested me for that matter. I even rang Canon to ask if the latest update has any effect on AF, and was told certainly NOT! In that case, I will pass on this version.

The 'placebo' effect that some things can have on the human mind is quite amazing!

Re: Wishfull thinking. Probably.

Of course you were told there are no focusing tweaks in the software.
because to have done so, would be to ADMIT the 40D has a problem...

Re: Focusing accuracy improved after installing 40D firmware 1.08

Just was wondering....I've still got version 1.03 and have never had any issue's other than err 99 which pisses me off, but can live with it...

I think it's time to update to newest version, can I go direct from 1.03 to 1.08, or do I have to stair step it up....

Thanks!

Yes you can go directly from 1.03 to 1.08. The firmware updates are progressive and include changes from previous ones.
