Promaster macrolume for 5D

I haven't had any luck with this forum answering questions about flashes, but I will try again. I just picked up the Promaster macrolume ring flash (non digital) for my Minolta 5d. However, determining the module I need is confusing. They sold me a FTA5000 module for the minolta "i" series, which I'm sure is wrong and I will return. Can the ringflash be used with the 7140 Sony/5d module that I will be using with the Promaster 5550DX flash I recently purchased?

I cannot answer your question aboout the 5D since I have a 7D. For the 7D the Promaster Macrolume TTL Digital ring flash body(#3003)
Promaster #9823DX module for Macrolume ring flash
are the modules I have.

Perhaps searching the threads under the heading of Promaster or Promaster macrolume will provide you with an answer. Sorry I could not be of more help, I know that Promaster was working on a module for the 5D as the module I have was an older one for non-digital cameras that would work on the 7D but was not compatible with the 5D. I don't know whether they were successful in producing a module for the 5D. Perhaps you should contact Promaster.

Re: Promaster macrolume for 5D

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I picked up the older non-digital ringflash(7759). However I did email Promaster and I was told "it does not have the low sync voltage requirements for digital cameras and there is no module available that will attach to this flash that is compatible with the Maxxum 5D." Even the 9823 module is not recommended for the 5d. Only the newer 7140 is compatible with the 5D and the Sonys.

I would love to search the forums for someone who used the non-digital flash and not fry their 5D, but as you know, the search does not go beyond January 2007 so all those years of info are lost. Unless someone can find a thread from their own history, there's no way to gather info from this site.

I do remember of a few early on fry there cameras. Don't use high voltage flash trigger with your 5D! They did fry the circuit in the camera.. Sorry to say I can't point you to the post's. I think they go back about 2 years or so.. Maybe others can fill you in a bit more then I ..

The macrolume is not compatible with digital cameras. There is a Macrolume digital that is designed for digital cameras but I couldn't get it to work with a Canon digital SLR either.

This is a 13 year old thread .

The O.P hasn't been on the forum since 2012 . Might even be dead .

Plenty of other options have been put on the market since then that are fully compatible though .
