4D hint in Chasseur d'Images january copy?

Latest Chasseur d'Images has a very nice article about the evolution of digital cameras since Kodak 100 in 1991.

In the Canon history you can see the 2008 year with a little icon showing clearly 4D label on it.

Is this a hint for the 5D successor? Chasseur d'Images has always excellent inside information...
Thought this might interest some of you...

Re: 4 is never used number for Canon

No 4th floors, no buildings number 4, etc

4 in Japan is like the number 13 here.

No 4D.

Yup, no 4 cameras from Japanese companies, that's why Nikon NEVER had an F4...

Chasseur d'Images is a joke

As credible as a 3 year old. The predicitions is this magazine are almost allways wrong

And a 4D? Well, when hell freezes over. But a Japanese company will never market a "4" model...

Chinese prefer not to say 4

Actually it is the Chinese who prefer not to say 4 (pun intended).

Given the potential size of the Chinese market, it can be a good reason for avoiding that number, particularly as a last digit.

That being said, that is not the only reason not to get carried away by this story

Please stop the hysteria

This guy is clueless, knows nothing and repeats ad libitum what a salesman tells him. Being French myself I will translate and concentrate this bulls$it.

"my salesman told me that there will be a new FF cam end of january" then "my salesman told it will be end of february" then "my salesman told me it will probably be a new 400" and finally "well, it's a 450, I'm not interested"

Thanks Ludo, we don't have to read 5 full pages of BS where, most of the time, the fanboyz and galz copy and paste some DPR chats, and trust me, the most stupid and irrelevant ones.

STOP copy and pasting bulls$it and go shooting using your gear...pppplease

Re: 4D hint in Chasseur d'Images january copy?

I think this could be true. Someone else has posted to say there would be a new model at PMA, not a 5D MkII but something above and perhaps related to the 40D.

So - how about a FF version of the 40D, called the 4D? Kind of logical, you'd have to say...

Re: Chinese prefer not to say 4

4 is phonetically similar to the word dead, but 4 is not necessarily bad luck since there are such things as the 4 "sky kings" of Hong Kong entertainment, and the 4 sky kings are actually folklore, as they are gods in heaven. Of course, a Mahjong table always sits 4 players. It has been that way for thousands of years. Since Mahjong is a popular game, it is unlikely that gamblers (who are superstitious) would play in a game that symbolizes bad luck.

Besides, only those who are superstitious would avoid things that may be bad luck. 13 is bad luck in the West, but there are no shortage of football players, like Dan Marino, who wear the number 13 on their jerseys. Some people (and some companies) try to show that they are not superstitious by deliberately choosing unlucky numbers.

Back to the magazine story. I think that 4D logo may be made up by the magazine editors. The new camera is unlikely to be called a 4D, not because it is bad luck, but probably because Canon may prefer to use a different number.

Actually that is not true at all

The Canon product line is classified in a hierarchy indicated by the number of digits:

grab-and-go slrs 3 digit (300, 350, 400 now 450)
midrange / paraprofessional two digit (10, 20, 30 now 40)
single digit professional (1D, 3, 5D, etc.)

ergo, they are already using '4,' (viz. 400, 450 and 40D) but not with a professional equivalent.

The reference below to an unlucky number to the Chinese might have something to do with that, as there is a 5D but no 500 or 50.

But still....

Understand...

That sarcasm is much more difficult to pick up in an internet posting than with spoken conversation - especially given the general stupidity floating around a lot of internet message boards.
