Sunrise over the dam

Headed down south early this morning to shoot the surfers, on the way stopped just outside of Strathalbyn to watch the sun come up and this is what I saw. Should’ve turned around and headed back after this, there were plenty of surfers but no waves or light. Some mornings are great and some are so-so, you get that.

Re: Sunrise over the dam

Looks like you got the best of sunrise right here John!, and the dam with it's improvised fence makes for a much more interesting pic. Good stuff. Thanks, adrian

Re: Sunrise over the dam

Thanks for looking Adrian, although it was disappointing to find no surf that morning it’s just as much fun finding new landscapes. I really like the versatility of the 11-22, it provides an awful lot punch in a very small package, it’s always near the top of my bag.

Re: Sunrise over the dam

G'day John

I lived at Mt Barker for nearly ten years, so it is very nice to see piccies of my old stamping ground.

Lovely shots of a very nice area. Strath is a nice little town.

The moral - Quit while you're ahead? Nah, it could have been an awesome surfer day as well - no way of knowing till you get there, is there?

regards, john.

Could have sworn...

that last shot was a 7-14. You surprised me by indicating all were 11-22 (just sold mine in favor of the 12-60 and 7-14 combo) I find the 11-22 was more forgiving than the 7-14.

Re: Could have sworn...

I can see how the last shot could be mistaken for the 7-14 as it’s tack sharp in the centre but slightly soft on the edges (which of course isn’t always the case with the 7-14), the centre focus point was on that last post in the water which is black with the sun behind it, out of the dozen shots taken here this was one of the few keepers as the rest just couldn’t find focus. This was a shame because the colors in the sky and clouds were better in the bungled shots, but then again I’ve never really been a morning person! I can’t praise the 11-22 enough for it’s sharpness and quality, it’s versatility allows for some great portraits also at the 22mm end.

I’ve had the E-3 for under a week and have only taken it out once so far (this post) and I’m really impressed with the picture quality, these were taken in RAW and required no sharpening/unmasking at all. Can’t wait to drive the 7-14 around with it.

Thanks for looking Ray.

Re: Sunrise over the dam

Hi John,

Small world isn’t it! Mount Barker sure has built up over the last few years it’s well on it’s way to becoming ‘burb’. Strathalbyn has started to be ‘modernized’ also, the old Haighs race stud has been cleared and the developers are in subdividing. The town has recently had it’s first ‘roundabout’ put in much to the dislike of the folk living there, my family reckon they’ll move when they put in the first set of traffic lights!

Funnily enough we know a couple that work in the city and have just bought a block out at Finnis which is a long drive to get home to, can’t understand why they like dust bowls so much!

Thanks for looking.

Hi John,
Pity about the surf but once again, great shots of the Strath area in any case.
