Re: Google Translation...

I wonder if "intermediate" means in between the 5D and another model (such as 1DsMKIII or 40D) or if it means between now and a full upgrade to the 5D.

Any thoughts? (Particularly from those who speak Japanese)

Here is the translator link:

The response by the Canon's CEO was on 23Dec07 and I quote the English translation about the new version of 5D:

Quote

We will promote the powerful product. The intermediate camera "EOS 5D" will be able to have enhanced durable and the picture element successor type goes on the market. In we will promote a better product with the equal in value position in.

Hi Mark,

The link is the Chinese translation and try to translate in my poor English about the 5D part as follows:

Quote

What strategies will be adopted by your company in the DSLR?

We will launch powerful products. A new version of the middle range 5D will be launched with more pixels and enhanced reliability in the market. This will be the best of the DSLRs in the same price

More Pixels, Same Price...

...not a surprise. Kodak had already proven the $3000 USD price point was viable for this type of camera. I expect Canon will stick to it.

Hi Zerglan,

After a re-read of the articles and would like to revise the translation:

We will launch powerful products. A new version of the mid range
5D will be launched with more pixels and enhanced durability to the
market. With the same price, we will release better products.

Say what now? 5D certainly did not "trump" 1ds2 IQ.

Re: Here you are - the page in english...

I was surprised that the president of Canon was changed suddenly immediately after I read the article of the newspaper but I noticed that it was a result of 2 times translation.
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=26142476

By the way today I read a different post which might be a leaked information.
The person said 2 DSLRs ($3500 and $2500) will be released next year.
He added the later one is 5D successor.
New model released in Jan might be 3D.

The reason is because Canon is still recruiting monitoring users of 5D and it is continued until March.

Better image quality at 1/3 with a close pixel count the price could be considered a trump by some.

The sMK2 has more pixels and a better body, but the image quality itself from the 5D is regarded better by most folks including me. Not that it makes the sMK2 bad, just a food chain thing. If Canon stays as predictable as they have been (and Nikon took huge advantage of that) then the same thing is set to repeat itself.

While the 1Ds MK3 does really very well in high ISO, it will be beaten at the high ISO by the 5D update is they use the same pattern of upgrades that Canon has done in the past. What Canon needs to do is to make their 5D upgrade into 2 parts, a low features lower priced version, and a high featured higher price version. Those that want the 1Ds MK3 are not going to be swayed by the 5D in any packaging because they need and want the closest thing to MF they can get. In the meantime, those at the 5D level can be teased by offering from other camera companies.

Magic eight ball says:

  • 16MP

  • 14bit

  • More durable shutter, probably with dust removal

  • Weathersealed. Lets hope Canon doesn't screw us on this one and do a half backed job, because they think they need to defend sales of the 1D series.

  • Same introductory price of original 5D

If this comes true I will buy one. If they drop the ball on the sealing, I'll go Nikon.

There is no reason why such an expensive camera should be lacking in this department.

I am definitely in the market for a 5D and am willing to wait ... however ... if the camera is not completely weather-sealed I will pass. It just makes no sense to hang "L" class glass ... which is weather-sealed ... on a non-weather-sealed camera. Quite frankly, I am getting a bit tired of all this "protecting another product at the cost of this product" BS. If you make the damn things, let each stand of it's own ... let the market drive your sales. Stop screwing around with your customers. Cheers ...

Well brand new 5D's are selling for about $2200 right now. Do you think anyone would pay an additional $1000 for 2 more MP's, 14bits and a few gaskets?
