The "source" did say it is NOT going to be a D80X or D90 this
round....

That's pretty odd considering the D80 is about due to be replaced by then. Even more odd if it sees a 2-year cycle instead of the previous 1.5.

Perhaps there's more to this story, or maybe I'm just wishfully thinking. But, then again, the D200 will probably drop to nearly the same price as a D80 by then.

Nikon intends to update the camera so that it can rival the 400D
replacement. It appears that Nikon desperately wants to be in the
same position as Canon years ago when the latter was essentially tops
in every category.

They'll need to add quite a few features to it if they want it to compete with any 400D successor.

450d specs...

Interesting I thought that the D40/x brand will be updated soon due
to the recent announcement of the 18-55 Afs Vr lens and rumoured new
level entry camera from Canon 450d, both probably announced at Pma in
Jan 08.

Got some expected specs of the canon 450 from this Dutch site: http://www.photofacts.nl/fotografie/rubriek/geruchten/canon_450d_en_canon_5d_mark_ii_verwacht_eind_januari_2008.asp

Canon 450D

  • 10,1 megapixel 1.6x crop sensor

  • Digic III processor

  • 14 bit RAW

  • sRAW format

  • 2,5 inch LCD screen

  • Live View

  • Improved autofocus

  • 3 to 5 fps

  • Dust removal system

I was surprised to see only 2,5" LCD screen and only 10,1 MP. Time will tell... Expected to be announced on January 24th.

Depending on how the 450 is priced, it sounds like a "poor man's" 40D....

The Age of Nikon?

If Nikon has an entry level DSLR up their sleeves that will have the same impact as the D300 and D3 do in their own respective market segments, they're going to rapidly eclipse Canon as the preeminent brand in DSLRs.

I'm Japanese.
The summary is "D40x is out of stock in Japan. It's only in Japan."
But that article contains ambiguous expression, so I can't say with certainty...
There's no official announcement on Nikon Japan website yet.

I suspect this would ever happen. There is a considerably steep learning curve for DSLR cameras. Having said that, looking at how well D40/D40X is sold in the last year and to see the glow on the face of the colleague when I told him that D40 does not have any shutter lag, I kind of believe that there will be more mechanical shutters replacing the electronic actuators now. I actually look forward for that.

Euhm, no. A 5D competitor as D80 replacement? That doesn't make any sense from a price point & target market point of view.

Sorry but this statement is total RUBBISH.
Put the D40 into AUTO mode and it IS a P&S, but with the speed and IQ of a DLSR.

I think that as entry level dslrs come down in price and get live view we will see the phasing out of bridge cams like the bigger Pany FZ50 and the Fuji S6500 and S9500. Why on earth would you buy one of these cams when they are almost the same size and weight as a dslr? At the moment there is still a price difference , but that is decreasing.
These bigger BRIDGE cams will dissapear.

Don't know why it doesn't work. Encode with Unicode or Japanese may help?

Re: BREAKING NEWS --- Nikon D60/Believe it when you see it!

Since there's probably more money to be made at the entry level than other levels, a D60 version makes sense. However, a quick web search shows that the D60 rumor has been around since November 2006 so I'll believe it when Nikon releases it.

Re: BREAKING NEWS --- Nikon D60

Is this the beginning of P&S model lifespans in the Nikon dSLR models?

The D50 lasted about 2 years before being discontinued, didn't it? The D40x has been out about 9 months? The D40 a year?

Re: BREAKING NEWS --- Nikon D60

The D50 was replaced by the D40 after about 18 month, a pretty normal product cycle duration.

Focus motor? No, Live view

I don't think we are going to see Nikon putting a Focus motor in the new D40, seems to me that in lens focus motors are rapidly becoming standard and cutting out the camera one to keep costs and size down on an entry level model makes good sense.

I predict that we will see 2 new cameras with the D300 sensor and live view, but with 3fps capacity and SD cards. The cheaper will not have the focus motor, the more expensive one, in addition to the focus motor, will have a larger buffer for burst shooting and 2 control dials.

Re: BREAKING NEWS --- Nikon D60

If I remember correctly, the D50 did not show up as discontinued until the release of the D40X. I could be misremembering but I don't think so.

I bought my D50 after the D40 came out and there was nothing but speculation of an imminent discontinuation at that point. That speculation, and price drop, is what caused me to get the D50 before it was gone.

If memory serves, the D50 and D70s showed up in the discontinued models section of Nikon's website the day the D40X was announced. April 2005 - Mar 2007. RIP.
