Re: End of D40X production !!?????

From Babelfish:

Nikon, when manufacturer stock of digital single-lens reflex camera "D40x" ended, notiified in the product information page of the Web sight. There is no especially announcement concerning D40 which does the body similarly. As for D40x, for the entry which is sold in March the digital single-lens reflex camera. With the sisters machine of D40 which is sold in 2006 December, D40x loads 1,020 ten thousand pixels CCD and the image processing engine which are equal to D80 vis-a-vis D40 loading the effective 610 ten thousand pixels CCD of APS-C size. Besides the fact that the finder of penta- mirror type is employed, the motor for focusing drive inside body is abbreviated.

To further add to the confusion, on Ken Rockwell's site:

"November 3rd, 2006: The Nikon D60 has been renamed the D40."

Re: BREAKING NEWS --- Nikon D60

Interesting I thought that the D40/x brand will be updated soon due to the recent announcement of the 18-55 Afs Vr lens and rumoured new level entry camera from Canon 450d, both probably announced at Pma in Jan 08.

Not sure about the D80 replacement, perhaps Nikon will give us a surprise and announce it same time but not on sale for a couple of months...

My guessimate it would be the same body & battery, without AF in body motor, 3" Lcd, 12 mp (maybe same sensor as from A700), Anti-dust featurette, Live view, slightly improved AF & metering, etc.

Who knows ..... could be exciting and expensive time ahead in 2008..

Re: BREAKING NEWS --- Nikon D60

The "source" did say it is NOT going to be a D80X or D90 this round....

Re: Nikon realignment of range?

The bablefish translation seems to say that the D40x is to be discontinued but NOT the D40. Or am I reading this terrible translation wrong ???

If this is the case it is very possible that the D40 will stay as Nikons entry cam for the time being with a new D80 ( or whatever) fitting in between the D40 and the D80. The D40x is really too close in spec to the D40 for the two to continue side by side.

We may be seeing Nikon realigning their camera range.
IE
D40

D60 ...closer to the D80 (than the D40x) in specs but still underneath it. This would compete more dirrectly with the Canon EOS400 ( upcoming EOS450) leaving the D40 underneath

D90 ...to come later on to sit in between (spec wise) and replace the D80 AND D200. Maybe even Full frame as a 5D compeditor.

Re: Google translation

Part of the Google trnslation of the dcwatch page.

"Nikon, digital SLR cameras "D40x" manufacturer's inventory has been completed, the Web site's product information page announcement.

The D40x only domestic manufacturer and the end of the inventory. The D40 will continue to be confirmed. "

Re: End of D40X production !!?????

May I offer you a translation by native Japanese. This article is dated 27 Dec.

The first para says “Nikon announced on their product information website that the stock holding of D40X finished. There was no mentioning of D40.” (The second para explains the difference between D40 and D40X, so I skip.) The third para is post script on 28 Dec, saying that the above announcement was not on the website anymore. The termination of stock holding of D40X is only for domestic market. Also it was confirmed that sales of D40 continues.
(End of translation.)

I think the postscript is not so logical when translated. But that is what it says. There is another website by Nikon indicating in red character that they now stopped taking order for D40X. See

Wow! Nikon is really keeping up the pressure...

Despite the spectacular sales of the D40x and its relatively recent release date:
http://bcnranking.jp/news/0712/071219_9357p1.html

Nikon intends to update the camera so that it can rival the 400D replacement. It appears that Nikon desperately wants to be in the same position as Canon years ago when the latter was essentially tops in every category.

I kind of suspect that future DSLRs releases are going to follow the same trend as current compact digicams: shortening shelf life. Didn't Olympus and Pentax start this trend a year ago.

I hope such aggressive competition can only result in cheaper and better cameras for everyone. Will DSLRs eventually replace compact digicams in terms of popularity?
