Most of the images I have taken so far with my FZ18 have been relatively static.

We took the grandkids over to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee yesterday for some shopping and some amusement park rides (guess which activity they liked the best?).

I took some images of the kids driving "go-carts" at one of the local tracks. The carts, particularly the one driven by the older granddaughter, were pretty fast, reaching speeds of 45+ mph.

The FZ18 might not be the best choice for low-light, fast action images indoors but, as you can see, it does a nice job outdoors.

Very nice photos, but you left out one. Where's the photo of you in a go cart, I'm sure one of your pretty grand-daughters know how to use grandpa's camera. Just cutting up with you a little, very nice photos and lovely grand-daughters.

Bill - Nice shots. You've mastered the pse5 + noise ninja pp combo.

These head on shots are relatively slow action. Do you have some from the side? Was the +1/3ev intentional in #1?

The -1/3 exposure compensation was intentional. I usually keep it there as my "default" setting.

I think I have a couple of images, showing fast lateral movement. Will try to post one or two on in my pbase gallery tonight.

Thanks for sharing these Bill. One was at +1/3 and another at -1/3. Were these intentional, or were you bracketing (ex, EV=0 with bracketing being + - 1/3).

Also, were they done at Shutter Priorty (1/500 and 1/320 twice) or perhaps Sports Mode.

Best,

Peter F.

Peter:

I went back and looked at the EXIF for the images. I had forgotten that I had changed the EV settings, because the bright, almost white concrete was fooling the camera's meter and causing under exposure.

I generally shoot 90% of my images on "P" and manually adjust settings, when necessary. I may have used the "sports" setting, as I was experimenting with different combinations. Just don't remember. Some folks say the focus is a bit faster in "sports", but I have found the focus in "P" is very good. Shutter lag was almost non-existent.

Thanks to all for the good words.

It IS nice having the grandkids around, especially the 13-year-old who lives with us. She has lived with us since she was 10-months old, so she is more daughter then granddaughter.

Being retired, I can spend a lot more time with her than I could with my own kids ...... and spoil her rotten!

Just tell the girls that two wheels is more exciting, I'm sure they can get two of the gocart wheels off the ground if they know that's what Grandpa wants.

Just waiting for mine to get a bit older so I can spoil them like that also

Go-carts are OK, but I like my fast motoring excitement on two wheels!

Actually, the older granddaughter did "no wheels" a couple of times.

There is a series of dips (like ski moguls) on a very steep hill, just before the bottom curve where I took her photo. If you get the cart going fast enough, you can actually get airborne and catch some "big air".

As for my two wheels, in my younger days I could do motorcycle one-wheel "wheelies" for almost a city block. No more of that stuff now though....at my age, I break entirely too easy!

Fred: The lateral movement image you wanted to see has been posted in my pbase gallery:

I only had this one image of the younger granddaughter. All the other images were either head on or just coming into a curve.

She is moving at a pretty good speed, but had slowed down some for the curve. She would have been moving much faster on the straightaway, but I never got over to that side of the track.

Thanks. Yes, they ARE a bit cute (not that I am prejudiced or anything!), so I guess I'll just have to keep them!

Beautiful weather over in Tennessee yesterday, especially for late December (high temperature was 56 degrees F). The rains came in about the time we were leaving to return home to North Carolina (only a 62 mile trip).

Have a great Christmas and New Year!
