Tigers maul man in Guwahati zoo, India

I felt sad readin it. Reminds me of the need to use common sense and not get overcome by the desire to get the perfect shot by being careless.

An attempt by a man to shoot close-up photographs of tigers in their enclosure at the zoo in Guwahati turned fatal after the animals bit off his hand on Wednesday. The man later died.

Anyone remember the details of......

the pro photographer, who was quoted as saying something like, "If your photos are not exciting enough, your not getting close enough to your subjects" (or something to that effect) a few months before he was killed by a Lion on the African plains. Doh !

I believe the quote is a paraphrase of one from Robert Capa, one of the founding Magnum photojournalists who covered wars from the Spanish Civil War to Vietnam where he died from injuries gotten from a land mine

Capa's exact quote is "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough"

Actually this was Robert Capa, a famous war photographer. He died when he stepped on a landmine.

There's always the other photographer (graphic)

The one who gets the picture.

I guess during Capa time they did not have tele lenses that we have today.

He probably think they are tame house cats. Sad! He really asked for it by putting his hand inside the enclosure.

Heartening to see...

that he/she decided to get in the way and take a snap rather than throwing the camera at the cats. Oh and then publish on the web for the relatives to take a peek and relive their day out.

In the U.S., every year there are cases of dim bulbs getting out of cars at safaris, because the lions look so cute! The inevitable happens. Is it low IQs? Or is it generations of Walt Disney anthropomophising animals?

Yes, actual picture.

Nathan Yan wrote:

Yes. It was in the papers today.

I read this thread after having read about it in the papers earlier. Some reactions seemed rather light-hearted, and I found it disturbing. So I decided to post the picture. Not so easy to make jokes about it now, is it? Once you've seen a picture, the whole thing becomes much less removed. The power of photography...
