CHDK on A720IS - Firmware coming.

Some days ago I read about a method to make an SD-Card bootable in a Canon Camera. I tried it and it worked with my A720IS.

After some trying and trying again I finally got a firmware dump which will be available for download tomorrow.

Does anybody else have this camera and is interested in porting CHDK?

Congratulations on getting the firmware dump!

I don't have the camera, but just in case you were not aware, there is a development page set up on the CHDK wiki for this model. It would be very helpful if you could edit that page and add information about what you did, and then whatever progress you make.

Thanks. I hope to progress faster, now that the difficult part of getting useful data from recording a blinking LED with a soundcard is done.

I am. I did it

This was written after I found out that blinking the firmware shoud be possible. I will document and upload everything discovered so far, tomorrow.

Hi

I've never come across these new firmware issues, can anyone tell me what they do? I've copied the file to my pc but I would like to know a bit more before I upload it to my 720is.

What does this hack firmware actually offer? Raw format?

_Original_ Firmware Available, but no CHDK yet

I think what the OP means is: He managed to aquire a dump of the original Canon firmware.

But now we need somebody to analyse these files and make a CHDK version which runs on the A720. This may be difficult, because the newest Canon cameras use a different operating system than the older cams (old: VxWorks new: DryOS or vice versa... I'm not sure). So I wouldn't hold my breath yet for some CHDK files which work with your A720. Maybe the CHDK has to be written from scratch for the new OS. I don't know if somebody is working on this task at the moment.

...but coming soon?

It seems that since Jeff first posted this, the CHDK community got a lot of work done in analysing the new operating system. Nice, didn't knew this.

This is not new Canon firmware and not really an "issue". CHDK is a third-party development supporting some Canon cameras and adding functionality (RAW, shooting histogram, battery gauge, etc.). You can read about it here:

and here (where supported cameras are listed)
