EF S 18-55 IS: First Impressions

Hi all,

yesterday, i got it.
i hadn't gone to buy it, but i asked for it and it was there.

i was completely surprised when i saw this lens cause' i was expecting it to be the same crappy kit lens plus IS. But it seems much better than that. To sum it up:

1
Nice broad rubber zoom grip with vertical lines.
Min focussing dist 0.25 (it was 0.28 with kit lens)

Front element proudly announces "made in japan" vis a vis sheepish "made in china"
hidden on the rear of earlier kit lens.
focus ring slightly broader.

zoom ring is smooth, and overall the lens gives cues of better quality than the decidedly cheap looking kit lens.

2

but the best part is this: i shot few pics while coming back home. i could handhold at 0.6 seconds from a moving taxi. The shot was tack sharp.

Overall image quality seems to be positively improved. May be its just IS thats making me feel like this. But i am very happy that the shots are much much better.

3

I had gone to exchange my 400D for a new one because i was getting very dark shots plus ERR 99 plus the kit lens was damn soft. I posted to this effect few days back.

Guess what. All these problems are gone. I believe that all the problems that people are reporting with 400D are actually the kit lens problems.

My camera is not giving dark pictures now (based on yesterday and today morning shooting).

Shots are not soft. They are crist with focus bang on.

hope this helps.

regards,

Re: EF S 18-55 IS: First Impressions

Received mine yesterday and I´m really impressed by the IS (more effective, 4 stops, almost noiselesse) and the picture quality (very sharp). I´ll surely keep this lens, will send several pics as soon as possible.

Tone is annoying

The IS system operates at a far higher frequency than any other Canon IS system. It is incredibly annoying to me, and even a couple of other people I had try it noticed that without me prompting what I was handing it to them for. In all fairness one of the older guys I gave it to couldn't even hear it after I told him what to listen for, but I could not own this lens it is that bad.

Does the barrel still wobble?

When I had the original D. Rebel, the build quality definitely bothered me more than the image quality. The barrel had way too much play, and manual focus was just not possible. Can you tell us more of the build? IMO, this is an important lens for Canon to get right. There is a significant price jump from the kit lens to the 17-85 IS, and the lens that plugs that gap will be a popular lens indeed.

What about the Sigma or Tamron offering?

Hi chaps

The Canon lens is £159 in the UK.

For around £259 you can get either:
Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro
or
Tamron AF SP 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di-II LD ASP IF

Both of these offer a maximum aperture of 2.8 right the way through the zoom range which I would imagine would be more useful than a slow aperture with image stabilisation to (partially) compensate.

I know a lot depends on the type of shots your planning with the lens but, overall I think I'd rather have the wider aperture than IS.

Just my 2 cents worth.

how to post the pictures

You can't. Your pictures have to reside on a web somewhere such as PBase, Flicker, etc., or your own web space available through your own service provider.

Re: EF S 18-55 IS: First Impressions

if money is not an issue for you...I sugest to go for the EF-S 17-55 IS F2.8.....

The EF-S 18-55 IS doesnt have the constant F2.8 which is very important

Yeah, well

That certainly would be valid if money were not an issue. But that lens is almost 5x the price. Should be interesting to see if the images are 5x worse with that new lens -- which I doubt. Looks to be a great value lens.

Re: EF S 18-55 IS: First Impressions

Similar to my experience in a Canon showroom.

Fast focusing and IS works very well. Image quality seems OK but cannot be certain as I was not able to bring images home.

Re: Yeah, well

the EF-s 17-55 IS F2.8 is very good for low light conditions....

The EF-S 18-55 IS will not do good job in these conditions

Re: EF S 18-55 IS: First Impressions

Nonetheless, can anyone explain why they would prefer IS over the constant 2.8 aperture you can get with the sigma or tamron lenses?

Re: Post some pictures, please! (nt)

And all over the U.S. as well. Try Norman, Canoga... the list goes on.

Re: EF S 18-55 IS: First Impressions

A review (in Swedish) and test pictures at various focal lengths and apertures are given at
http://www.cyberphoto.se/?info.php?article=123619

In short, the review says that the IS works very well as usual. It was no problem to get sharp pictures handheld at 55 mm and 1/15 s. For the price it is a very sharp lens. Compared to the Tamron 28-70/2.8, the difference was less than expected. The Tamron showed notably higher sharpness only at the edges. The build quality of the Canon lens is very poor.
