Concept is correct, but needs direct experimental proof. That would allow to correct the numbers. In my experiments for 12-bit ADC optimum is about 2 stops below the unity gain.

you're correct...

What I meant and didn't say well was basically don't crank up the ISO just to shoot right because conventional wisdom says it is so.
