How to download and use the CHDK G7 hack

here we go, no trawling through massive posts to get the info

1. go here and download the zip file to your computer
http://www.zshare.net/download/37426216a0c975/

2. unzip the file, on most PC's if you rightclick the zip file you should find an option to "extract all"

3. you should now have 2 files in a directory where you extracted the files to as follows

DISKBOOT.BIN
PS.FIR

4. get your SD card from your G7 and put it into your computers card reader

5. copy the files above to the SD card by using copy and paste. it is important that the files go into the root of the SD card. (i.e not in a seperate directory or folder)

6. put the SD card back in the camera

7. power on the G7, press the shoot/play button "> "

8. press menu and then press down 3 times so that "FIRM UPDATE" is selected

note** if you cameras lens has not yet retracted this option will not be visible, either change the retraction time to 0 sec or just wait for it to rertract and try this step again.

9. press set, you should be asked "update firmware version?" 1.0.0.0 > 1.0.1.0

10. press right to highlight ok and press set to accept

11. the camera will make its startup noise and the "powershot G7" startup screen will flash very briefly, also the button on the top right (printer button) will flash blue once (you might not notice it) and you will see a blue box (splash screen) with white text, shortly followed by a battery indicator at the top of the screen, and a % battery remaining in the bottom right

NOTE if you press the play/shoot button now (as you normally would) the camera will hang, to get round this do the following.........

12. press the shutter button half way

the lens will extend and you know the firmware is still running as the battery indicator is still visiible

13. to access the new menus press the print button (top right)

you should see "DEFAULT SCRIPT" and "ALT" displayed at the bottom, white text on a blue background

14. press menu and use the up/down left/right selector as normal and explore the new functions

NOTE the histogram will more that likely be in the way

to get rid of it press the printer button (top right) to take you out of CHDK menus

then press display as you normally would to get rid of the histrogram and grid lines....then press the printer button (top right) to go back into CHDK

hope this helps, as the original instructions arent THAT obvious and there are a few glitches that can make you think the software isnt working.

have fun

sorry the post is very long and feel free to add comments or edit/add to these instructions.

cheers

Re: How to download and use the CHDK G7 hack

oh and dont forget, turning the G7 off returns it to normal operation.

there is a way to get the hack to load in automatically but i prefer to do it manually every time

also once you have accessed the CHDK menus once you can press the play/shoot button as normal and the camera wont lock up

also you cannot shoot whilst CHDK menus are running, so press the print button to come out of them before trying to take a photo

Re: G7 ....only sd cards supported ??

Hi

I only have SD cards so im not sure but as long as you get the two files onto the root of your card then i cant see why it wouldnt work.

does the G7 come with a USB cable?? (think mines still in the box if it does!) if so then you should be able to access the SD card that way as your computer will still give it a drive letter.

dave

Re: shoot button

Well thanks for trying to help. I cant get the firmware update to show on the G7. I refused even using a camera until late 2004 so im still learning even though im sure I did all the steps correctly. Anyways im stepping away cause im getting this feeling to throw the computer out the window!!

Re: shoot button

Possibly best to come back and try it again later, I know how frustrating it can get at times.

Which step in the instructions do you manage to get to?

I have also read that certain G7's have a slightly different original firmware so this version of CHDK may not work with those cameras. try checking your firmware....the instructions for this are on the wiki page or see my other post requesting the instructions for the CHDK.

so the firmware hack only works with Version

Hi amoergosum,
Mine is : 1.00G (september-15-2006)

The hack doesnt work on it (camera hangs and i have to replace the battery to get it back to life)
Hope they dump the 1.00G firmware soon

Re: How to download and use the CHDK G7 hack

it enables your G7 to shoot in RAW.
But not only that...there are some other features, too.

Have you tried out to shoot some Raw pictures by now, Watred?
How do you like the quality?

Re: How to download and use the CHDK G7 hack

You would think canon would release up to date firmware for the G7, I wonder what the difference is between 1.00G and 1.00I and what was fixed in the process.

lets hope either canon release the 1.00I firmware or someone does a CHDK version for 1.00G owners.

Re: How to download and use the CHDK G7 hack

Ive only took one shot in RAW just to see if it works....which it does. im still playing around with various file converters and learning how to use RAW files. I hope to get out with the camera properly in the next few weeks.

Its a shame canon left this feature out as I now have something else to learn that will give me more control, its nice to shoot both RAW and JPG at the same time knowing that once i get home I can fully post process the RAW file to my own taste in case the normal JPG doesnt turn out that well.

the only downside is i might need a bigger memory card

Watred-
do you have Photoshop or Lightroom?
If so,could you try to open the RAW File with it?

Re: How to download and use the CHDK G7 hack

Thanks for CHDK hack now I can use G7 to take RAW and read them with kind of converter like UFRAW etc.

But is there any way to get the exif information from the RAW like shutter speed, aperture?
