40D better than I expected! - pics.

I bought a 40D to update my 20d backup while I am waiting for the 1DIII focussing issues to be resolved. But I wasn't expecting it to be this good ! The IQ and noise performance is certainly better than the 20D and I can crop a little harder with the extra 2 Mp. The AI servo on birds in flight is much improved (if not quite up to my 1DII's standards), the low light focussing is brilliant - as is liveview for macro, and the real-time histogram is awesome. The huge 3" screen, the menu system - particularly my menu is terrific - and so it goes on. This camera is a just a little diamond - I just love it. I'm beginning to wonder if I really need the 1DIII now - it is really that good !

Here is an orchid at 1600 ISO with no noise reduction (er- where's the shadow noise?) :

And here are some eagles followed by 100% crops (400 ISO)

Re: 40D better than I expected! - pics.

Just picked up my 40D today ( we're a little late here in Denmark ) and after having seen your pics, I went through the box again but to no avail - apparently we don't get model eagles as a part of the package here in Denmark

WOW - excellent pictures - I am impressed !!!!!!!!

But my initial shots also indicate that this camera delivers - I'm not sure it's just gonna be a backup for my 5D - more like a companion i guess !

Once again - kudos for your pictures !

P.S: Can I borrow the eagle someday ?

Live Histogram???

I have the 40D and was not aware of a live histogram. What do you mean by that and what do I have to "turn on" to see it? Thanks.

Great shots, and thanks for your comments on the 40D. I'm also impressed with the sharpness of your 100-400.

Re: very nice!!!

I didn't know the 100-400 could do that. Really nice. I think you helped me make up my mind about whether or not to pick one up.

Amazing pictures!!!

Wow, you sure know how to get the best out of this camera!

I am also very impressed by the 40D's IQ, after upgrading from a 20D.

Care to describe your post processing?

The shots were taken at a hawk conservancy, not wild, in order to give the camera a work out on AI servo on flying birds and an oportunityto check focus accuracy and IQ. So far it has blown me away.

Don't actually have a mkIII - I pre-orderd and cancelled it due the AF issues. I'm pleased to note that the 40D does not share the 1DIII problems. I shoot in RAW and use auto white balance, so "colour" is whatever you make it in the raw converter. I must say that the images from the 40D require minimal post-processing - probably less so than with my 1DmkII.

This is an awesome feature which enables you to adjust the exposure compensation dial before taking a picture - rather than taking a test shot and checking the histogram after. As you move teh "square" around the screen it measures the exposure under the square. To display histogram, press the info button in liveview mode repeatedly until it comes up.

Thanks peweg

The 100-400 is a great lens, but you have to work around it's limitations. I find you need to be pretty close to the subject (captive bird to test the camera in this case), stop down half to one stop from wide open. Shoot in good light. It struggles a bit if you are shooting at a distance that is at the limits of the lense's resolving power, it is also a tiny bit soft wide open. The 400 f5.6 prime is noticeably sharper and contrastier plus autofocuses quicker, and tyakes converters much much better - but it is not as versatile as the zoom.
