Re: pricing ...

Part of the extra cost is probably duties, we won't want the government to do without.

Bilingual packaging?

Maybe it costs a couple hundred to translate 'camera' into French? Je ne le sais pas.

Hello Doug.
Do you have idea whether the RAW file is 12 bit or 14 bit (Like the Nikon)?

Thanks.

Re: pricing ...

Conversely you could ask why aren't the U.S. prices higher, as opposed to why aren't the Canadian prices lower. After all the U.S. dollar has fallen against the Yen, just like it has against the Canadian dollar. That should make imported goods from Japan more expensive in the U.S. than in the past.

environmental seals & bucket of water

It means it's not usable in rain, unlike Pentax K10D that is durable

double the price of K10D. Nevertheless the sealing performance of
A700 is inferior to that of K10D. Oh well.

Would you allow me to test that out with your K10D? Here is an interesting anecdote about $8000 Canon 1Ds mkII environmental sealed bodies:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/aa-07-worked.shtml

"There were quite a few camera failures, most of them occasioned by our shooting in rain on the first day ashore in The Falklands. The rain was not heavy – more a persistent drizzle than a heavy rain, but it took its toll. In all, 90 minutes of wet shooting produced six 1Ds MKII cameras which stopped working for one reason or another. Three of them recovered after a night of drying out. Three remained hors de combat for the rest of the trip."

Add the 70-200mm lens to the package.

Canada:
A700 $1,600 CAD
70-200 $2,600 CAD
Package price $4,200 CAD

At 93 cents to the US dollar = $3,900

US Prices
A700 $1,400
70-200 $2,000
Package price = $3,400

That's a $500 difference before sales taxes.

I'd like to support Sony Canada, but that differential is just too
great.

has the price drop for the 70-200 hit Cananada yet?

compared to some of the Canon in Canada pricing .. that is not bad.. though Nikon seems to be best.

Ya, but what isn't overpriced in Canada?

Cars, computers, luxury watches, clothes…pretty much everything in Canada is sold at more than just the exchange rate difference. Maybe it's because the market is smaller so they can't make up the distribution and marketing costs with the lower volumes. In any case, $130 (minus shipping and brokerage fees) doesn't sound substantial enough to be worth the hassle.

How big is it compared to the 7D? Same size? Smaller? Bigger?

Size ...

My only point of reference for size, not being a Minolta user in the past, would be the Canon A2 film camera. The blunt pentaprism reminds me of the A2, another journalist at the presentation agreed with me on that, and size-wise, with the grip I'd say it's pretty close to the same.

It's not a small, discrete camera. It's a workhorse pro camera along the lines of the 20/30/40D built to chew it's way through a wide range of assignments reliably, predictably, and with the highest quality. The A700 has the frame rate to do sports, the resolution to do product, the high ISO performance for journalism, in a tough durable body with long-lasting shutter that will ensure that it can do this day in and day out.

By the way, if you want to do that, use the Canada Post

"borderfree.ca" service.

I just went to the borderfree site. I don't quite understand it.
Why is it better than just phoning or emailing a US supplier and
placing an order?

It is just that with that service, your are totally sure of the final price. No surprise. What you will pay will include the total shipping and any duty fees or handling fees.

Sometime, when using other services, you will have to pay some extra fees at the reception of the package. And you never know how much before.

And for item at a hight price like a camera, well it is good to know before. And it help to make comparison.

The only bad side is that the choice or merchants is very limited....

Don't start getting real

Why inject reality into our discussions?

Re: environmental seals & bucket of water

As the reviewer says, that's due to the camera failure, which is the manufacture's fault.

In case your K10D gets damaged due to rain, it can be repaird for free in light of the guarantee. But if you use A700 in rain and the camera gets damaged, the manufacture will not repair it for free since it's out of their gurantee.

after all about that bucket of water.

And I guess your guestimation is wrong. The bucket of wate thingy was confirmed by Pentax. The designer himself said the camera is durable even if a bucket of water is thrown onto it.

Reality? Absurd.

liquid stereo wrote:

We were talking about the manufacturers' sales talk in the first place. If realities mattered, it would be absurd to talk about all about A700, since it's not launched yet. Also in your logic, A700 might get damaged even due to dust and moisture.
