Wow

That looks like a very nice camera for Sony users. They've stayed even with the VGA LCD resolution (poor Canon) although I don't find that to be in my top ten list of features. They don't post a lot of specs. Looks to be just a tad below the D300. I didn't see any real AF module specs which is a big feature to get right.

Good for competition. Always knew Sony would be right there with the other SLR big boys.

Everything will even out. Eventually, it will get back to the body ergonomics and handling again. Same as the film days. I expect Nikon will end up on top.

Press ESC and the box goes away

You can then read about the Sony A700 but no pics. Dave

Sensor specially designed for this camera??

The sensor is speically designed for this camera, does it mean it is not the same one used in D300??

notice they have the high res VGA LCD too!

5 fps, so it won't threaten the D300.

Sony is making progress, but it is not a huge leap forward in processing speed. I reckon its flagship model will probably have a 12mp full frame sensor to keep the frame rate at 5fps or slightly faster. That probably means it won't be competing against the D3 but would more likely be targeted at the Canon EOS 5D. We will likely see full frame prices drop because of competition.

it has 12 bit on the sensor... Nikon has 14 bit on the sensor. Its not the same sensor as the D300....

I noticed the sensor doesn't seem like the one used in D300. Does it mean they are keeping the good one for themselves???

Same sensor

I don't see why not. I cannot believe Sony would develop two 12MB APS-C CMOS sensors (something they haven't done before) simultaniously.

AFAIK the 14 bit on the D300 are coming out of a 12 bit sensor by doing some fancy tricks during the readout of the sensor.

This does not seem to be in the same league as the D300. IQ may well be good but there's no LCD and the vari-program dial is an amateur feature. Fit and finish on Sony gear is always good, but professional level ruggedness ? - I doubt it.
It might give the D80 some competition but even that camera has an LCD.

What do make of this statement?

"The sensor was made by Sony specifically for this camera, according to the company."

Am I reading too much into it??

These sensors are "cousins". Nikon went for speed while Sony went for higher image quality. It will be interesting to compare the IQ at various ISO's once images become available.

I disagree.

I don't actually disagree with the conclusion that it won't threaten the D300. However, the reason has nothing to do with 5 fps vs. the 6 fps of the D300. Yes, I know you can increase the speed to 8 with the grip. Who knows whether there won't be similar add-ons with the Sony.

I think that things like the AF module will be much more important to D300 buyers.

Re: Sony drops their bomb ---- A700 is here

looks like a hybrid of Nikon and Canon.

Maybe there are other hints of other brands there...but those are the two I look at mostly!

Re: I disagree.

But we really don't know much about either cameras AF yet.

Reports are of the A700 having AF performance like the 7, (not the 7D), which if true the A700 could have an extremely good AF system.

LOL, since when is continuous framerate an indication of how well a camera competes? LOL!!!!
