Re: New Sony A700 specs and pics

I sincerely hope that the "die-hard" KM folks get the camera that they have waited a long, long time for. My A-100 went a long time ago with my main gripe being the amount of lenses available and the extortionate prices. Lets hope Sony also give those guys some more, reasonably priced quality lenses ...................... obviously they won't be as good as Canon but they deserve something better

Yeah...without live view, only .9x viewfinder mag etc. Lack of live view might be a deal killer for many.

Re: New Sony A700 specs and pics

We took pictures without LiveView many years and still are livinng. We are not killed by missing this technology.

I am glad that A700 does not have LiveView. I tried 40D and D300 at IFA... nothing special I found.
Sorry...

Fewer features than D300 ...

Vibrio wrote:

The A700 seems to be missing Live View and does not use a pro-class AF system (11 AF points, without solid info on whether any other than the center point is cross-type). Frame rate is also slightly lower and viewfinder mag. is less (similar to 20D). Likely to have smaller frame buffer, too. We'll find out more tomorrow (including price point), the official announcement date.

I'll put my money on $1200

to be competitive in the marketplace I don't think they can be any higher.

I'm betting $1499. Sony doesn't seem to care much about market prices. Just look at their lenses!

Nothing special - what did you expect (and did not find)?

Re: My Bet: List at $1599 (nt.)

Possible price between 40d & D300 I would imagine, however personally I don't like the Square Like Blockie 60's styling of the Sony Dslr unlike the curvy Canon & Nikon bodies + lenses & accessories on Sony are a bit pricey for my liking.

Although image quality of the Sony bodies are quite good having shot the Sony A100; it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Do you really put that much weight on how a camera looks? I agree with the accessory prices - just ask anyone on the Sony SLR forum

That's fine. I can understand if it wasn't ergonomically pleasing. Me I couldn't care less what a camera looked like, just how it handled. Well, I wouldn't want hot pink.

Sony 16-105mm f3.5-5.6

Sony also had several new lenses. The new kit lens for the A700 is the Sony 16-105mm f3.5-5.6. With the Sony 1.5x sensor that has the fov of 24-157.5mm. Sounds like a nice range. With the Canon 1.6x sensor we would need it to be 15-97mm.

Impressive looking specs. I will be very surprised if the price is below 1500 though.

40D vs. D300 vs. A700 viewfinders

The sensor size is part of the calculation though. Here is a comparison of the 40D, D300, and A700 viewfinders:

It makes me wonder if there is an industry standard for how viewfinder magnification is measured. Everyone raves about how big and bright the Nikon D200/D80 VFs are, but if you look thru an A100 side by side it is not much smaller. Smaller, yes but only marginally. The A100 VF is almost identical to the 30D in size. It's miles ahead of the Rebel or anything from Oly. If the new cam is larger than A100 (per specs) then it should be as good as any crop sensor camera.

Putting my "greedy but realistic to the market" glasses on, I still don't see over $1450.

The viewfinder on the A100 was OK, but I would have to disagree that it's as big as the 30D. It's definitely darker -- but that's to be expected from a pentamirror VF. Now the 40D VF is even better than my KM 7D.

I just hope they did a better job with this one than the POS kit lens they sold with the KM cameras (and I'd assume it was the same lens on the A100). I hated that lens SOOO much. 105mm @ f5.6 seems awful slow. Hopefully they'll have an advanced kit with the CZ!

Word is that the Sony 18-70mm is better than the KM 18-70mm so, I guess, they did something to it.

Yeah, the Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 is slow at 55mm too. Kit lenses tend to be slow. Someone on the Sony forum that has used the A700 and 16-105mm says that optically it is better than the Sony 18-70mm, but not as good as the Sony Zeiss 16-80mm f3.5-4.5. Pretty much what one would expect.

That POS lens you mentioned above (I believe you meant 18-70, because there were also 24-105) was the best kit lens available on the market when released. Very capable for its price. C and N offerings were not even close to what KM basically gave away.
