#1 is rather noisey

for being iso5000 and 1/1000. Which means it coudl have easily been taken at iso2500 and 1/500. As others have said the shadows are quite noisey. Noisier than my 5D iso6400 shadows.

ISO6400 on a 5D?? You jest, sir.

Ahem - the Canon 5D only goes up to ISO3200, so unless you're using a different 5D than everyone else...

Anyway; the debate over noise levels on a pre-production body such as the D3 is pointless at present - I'd rather wait for Phil, Rob Galbraith, Thom Hogan or Bjorn Rorslett or any of the regulars at Luminous Landscape to offer up detailed analytical reviews of production-level bodies before making judgements.

What we see coming out of the Osaka IAAF are, at best, merely hints at how the D3 and D300 will perform. As much as I might like to evaluate a unit myself, I don't envy these photographers the task of getting useable results out of a camera that they're as good as unfamiliar with.

Put it this way: if you had a wedding booked for next week, would you shoot it with a pre-production D3??

Thought not

What? I would. But then again, I'm not normal. LOL

Re: these have heavily boosted saturation,

From reading the rest of this sub-thread, I think the photos are real D3 photos, but I do agree the colors have been boosted, which contibutes to the slight color shadow noise.

I can't wait for my camera to arrive though, that much is for sure!

Ever hear of pushing? I shoot at ISO (exposure index, really) 6,400 to 12,800 on my 5D occasionally. You can shoot at any exposure index you want on any camera with manual controls. If you have RAW, you can even do a careful job of it because the data hasn't been gamma-corrected yet.

I don't see the point in looking at resized images. I can't find any links to large size images (the website is confusing as hell) care to point me to the full size download links? (assuming they are there)

thanks.

There are none, David ...

... unfortunately.

The only full-sized images were the two ISO 3200 ones.

Here's the deal

I downloaded a few of these high ISO photos to look at the EXIF data. I saw ISO 5000 shots cropped down to 1000 pixel width and shown at 100%. Awesome. Now considering the actual file is 4.3 times wider you can get an idea of the incredible performance. Simply awesome!!! By far the new leader in high ISO!!! By far. If I shot sports, pk, nature, event, club, weddings, or other events requiring high ISO this camera would be a choice of one. One old man's considered opinion.
