Will sunpak 383 wreck my K10D?

Hello there,

I have a Sunpak 383 that I bought to use with my Panasonic FZ20(never got around to learning how to use it). I've asked several sales people from at least 4 photo stores that all say it will not work with the K10D and will damage the camera, but I've seen it mentioned in the forum as a possible 3rd party flash. Has anyone used this flash with a K10D? Forgive the next newbie question, but what is TTL and why doesn't it work with 3rd party flashes? Thanks!

Re: Will sunpak 383 wreck my K10D?

it will work fine and should not damage the camera. It is a straightforward autothyristor type flash which has decent power.

TTL means Through The Lens. TTL flash systems have a sensor in the camera which detects the amount of light the flash is putting out and cuts it off when the correct exposure has been reached. For Pentax only the *istD and Ds cameras have this sensor. This system has been replaced by P-TTL flash which uses a pre-flash to determine the correct exposure,it calculates the main flash power irequired then fires the main flash.

Lots of good stuff on JensR's website - http://www.jr-worldwi.de/photo/index.html?ist_DS_internalflash.html

Your sunpak 383 can be used on the k10d without problems. You'll have to set everything up manually, but it will work.

As others have said, it will be fine.

Quick set-up guide for "flash only"-type pictures with a non-dedicated flash like your 383:

  • set camera to M mode and shutter speed to 1/180 or less

  • make sure camera and flash are set to the same ISO

  • choose which aperture you want on the flash

  • set the same aperture on the camera

  • shoot!

It's easy, give it a try

Thank you John from another clueless one. It's too bad that they can't come out with instructions as simple as yours for some of these modern P-TTL flashes. I guess that's what you call progress.

Since this topic is up, I wonder whether you can tell me whether my ancient Yashica CS-201 auto would fry the circuits in my K10. Not that I have any intention of using it, as I have an AF-360FGZ, but it would be nice to know if it can be used at a pinch.

I own the 383 super and it's fine. I used it on past cameras as well. You just have to be careful with "off-brand" types (Sunpak is a well know company) and much older flashes as their voltage was too high. With that said, I'd go for it.

Re: Will sunpak 383 wreck my K10D?

I have a collection from the net of stated trigger voltages and the 383 is in good shape there.

383 Super Your call 3.74V, per Colin Ethington;3.83, per Curtis Avery;,6.85V, according to Sunpak's techs;6.86V per Geoff McKnight6.8V per Phil Shima using a Quantum battery7.05V per Jon Boehm& 10.29V from Dave Dill...different batteries, different versions, or...?Joe Templeton measured 7.2V and had a reassuring talk with Sunpak

Nope, got it.

I bought the sunpak 383 for my fz-20 too, and tried it on my k10d. It works ok, but it's purely a manual flash (in the sense that you have to set the flash intensity) on the k10. You don't have to fire it manually, of course.

In a pinch, I use it, but I find I use a lot less flash, and the onboard of the k10 is better than the fz-20 was.

Re: Beware ancient flashes

You'll need to measure the trigger voltage to make sure it is safe for your camera.

None of the truly ancient flashes were designed with any electronics in a camera in mind, so they often have very high trigger voltages which could possibly fry the internals of your K10. It seems that at some point in the 1980s this changed a bit...

Pretty much any modern flash (like the 383 Sunpak or 285HV Vivitar, etc. ) will work fine on a K10.

K100D also?

I assume the Sunpak 383 will also work on the K100D? Is that correct?

Does it just go in the hot shoe or do I need to buy anything else to attach it?

The directions posted above make it sound not too hard to use. I have no idea how to use an external flash.

The Sunpak 383 sounds like a decent inexpensive flash with bounce and swivel. Is there a downside I don't know about?

Thanks for helping this newbie!

Not yet.

I've used it with all the others, though and several Canon cameras too. I works fine with all of them.

None that I can think of, but then I don't use modern flashes that need a manual just to work out how to switch them on...

You can't do all the fancy things that a dedicated flash can do - but that's only a concern if you want to actually do them. If you need to ask what they are you don't need them, by definition

Re: Will sunpak 383 wreck my K10D?

I have a Pentax K10D and a Sunpack 383 flash from the days I was a fz20-fz30 shooter. The flash works pretty well with my camera, you just have to manually set it.
