Re: Only 2

These two are enough, Bobby Fine details on the swallow and even though the perch ain't all the great it's always a good day when you can get a chance at an owl!

Elephants from South Africa

All shot with Canon 400D with Canon 70-300 IS USM DO lens.

This female elephant, part of a large herd, was getting irritated with our proximity and was just turning to warn us away when I snapped this.

This elephant was browsing just below us as we stood on a bridge in the extreme northern end of Kruger National Park. (One of the few places in the park you can alight from your vehicle.)

A young female offers a submissive greeting to one of the largest females in the herd.

This small family group was part of a large female/young herd of over 50 elephants. I don't know if it's a mother and two different aged young or just a group of 'friends', but they always stayed right together.

For those who feel that longer is better when it comes to telephoto lenses, this elephant was so close to the vehicle that I couldn't begin to get the whole animal even zoomed back to 70mm. So I did the next best thing; I tried to explore the animal from a different perspective. It's not your typical elephant shot, but I like it.

Re: Rescued Baby Osprey in Montana

Beautiful work Joan. I never would have guessed that Osprey would make a psuedo nest like this if the 1st one is lost. A story with what looks like a very happy ending and lucky you for being there to witness it!

Re: Elephants from South Africa

Thanks for your contribution, something a bit different from
and more exotic than the usual birds here... I think
the last one works pretty well and I also particularly
liked the second one.

SF Bay Area birds in flight with 1D Mark III

I don't know what the BIF issues are supposed to be with the 1d3, but I've found that my 1d3 is much more capable of focusing on birds in flight than my 20D. All these photos were taken with my 1d3 and 100-400L, hand held. All the blurriness is my fault, not the camera's.

  1. 1 Barn Swallow. This has motion blur because I was shooting at 1/200 sec.

  1. 2 Barn Swallow skimming. This is focused on the wing instead of the head, and it also has some motion blur.

  1. 3 Caspian Tern with fish. This has some motion blur, at 1/640 sec. It may also be slightly out of focus, but I'm still impressed that it focused so quickly, since I was focused at infinity about a second before taking the shot.

The rest of these are sharp.

  1. 4 Caspian Tern

  1. 5 Forster's Tern with fish head

  1. 6 Forster's Tern with fish

  1. 7 Snowy Egret

Re: Weekly Wildlife Thread aug 5 2007

Taken a couple of weeks ago near Ayers Rock Central Australia. We saw him feasting on a dead kangaroo with four others. When I approached they scattered to some nearby trees. I slowly walked towards them and switched to AIservo, hoping he would take off. When he did I was able to track him as he passed by.

70-200 F4 AIservo.

Cheers,

John

Excellent flight series

I like the first one of the swallow - would be difficult with being such a fast moving bird. I have just noticed the difference between the D60 and 30D with focusing with 100-400L.

Colourful Birds 300 2.8 IS

I took my 300 2.8 IS to a small zoo this weekend. This is the first time I have used this lens outside a rink. Used a MarkIIN. A nice light walk around combo...

These birds were pretty easy to shoot as they were standing still for the most part. I gained a new appreciation for those who shoot wild life

What a lovely shot! The colors are beautiful and I like the framing. Visited your gallery--so many excellent photos. I'll definitely be back.
