thanks for the post.

I find that getting the flash to do what I want to be one of the toughest challenges. That and reading the heiroglyphics on the flash, do I want squiggle zorch, zorch squiggle squiggle, or squiggle splat zorch?

I have a used copy of AF540 flash and when I used it the first time in PTTL in the normal mode with L (eading curtain synch) on P mode, I do not notice any preflash fired and yet the exposures seem accurate. Do the preflash noticeable as in a red eye reduction kind of preflash or it is way too fast that we won't notice the preflash?

Anyone, please help with my newbie question on flash.

Thanks,
Hin

The preflash and main flash take place within a few hundredths of a second. In fact in wireless mode with remote flashes there are several flashes as each flash communicates with the camera. None of this is visible to the eye.

When I can master technique I'll be a photographer.
When I can realise a vision I'll be an artist.
When I get paid I'll be a professional.

Thank you so much for the valuable reply. And big thanks to you for spending your time on the chart -- it has helped me tremendously and it really adds value to the inadequate information on the K10D user manual regarding flash or that of the flash user manual.

Thanks,
Hin

Not completely true - if You compare flash in A or M mode and P-TTL flash, you will feel, that A/M is shorter. If You have good eyes - You can even feel a pulse of the P-TTL flash. That is the preflash and the main flash.
