I love that 12-24mm DX - Cambodia pics

I have spent the last two weeks in Siem Reap Cambodia and only used the 12-24mm DX (on a D40 to keep things real light) for these trip reports. I brought more lenses but have not bothered to use them.

All adjustments are made in Lightroom 1.1, but no Saturation

There are localized Curve adjustments, Brighten (to lift the shadows), a bit of Vibrance (sort of like Saturation), and a large dose of Clarity adjustments.

I'm an old Kodachrome 64 user, so I kind of like that slightly saturated look.

hmm. I would be interested in seeing the unedited shots. I'll probably like them better. I like some saturated shots too but not when people are in the picture.

Excellent pictures. I'm thinking about getting this lens. These may convince me. BTW, I think the colours look great.

Don't hesitate, go for it. I just bought mine while on holiday overseas and I really like this lens.

Thanks guys and I kind of like the colours as they are too.

I have been using this lens for over three years now and have grown to appreciate it more and more over time.

those are some nice pictures!

Would you kindly comment on the CA properties of this lens...I am considering buying one for travel but thinking of CA (high according to Photozone), I am in some doubt

Beautiful shots! I love the saturated look.

I am thinking of getting one for travel myself. Could you please comment on how much distortion correction you have to do to get these shots?

Re: I love that 12-24mm DX - Cambodia pics

I am not doing any distortion correction whatsoever. I realize that this may be a concern to some people but I actually do not mind distortion in wide angle lenses and instead look for a way to work with it.

By constanly watching the vertical and horizontal lines in my viewfinder, I tilt and angle the camera untill I find an image that works for me.

I also crop and rotate the image in Lightroom (or Photoshop) to lessen the effect of distortion when it is unpleasing. Sometimes I purposely look for an angle that enhances the distortion.

One of the reasons that I really like wide angle lenses is that when everything is working right, you get the feeling of falling into the image or being able to step into it.

The image of the soda cans above is one of my favorites in this series because when I look at it it instantly puts me back into the chair I was sitting in at the time that I took the picture. If I had not held the camera perfectly straight in relation to the cans it would have been completely distorted.

If I am doing product photography for a high quality print catalog or advertising campaign then I am concerned about CA.

For travel photography all I care about is whether or not the lens I am using gives me a result I find pleasing. So if possible test the lens before you buy it or buy from a store that lets you return and change for another lens after a test.
