Why on earth doesn't D40 have Grid lines??

I'm struggling to take pictures that are parallell with the background
Especially nature shots with horizon.
Don't know why exactly but i always seem to fall to the same side.
I wan't grid lines to help me and the silly D40 doesn't have it.
Even my old Olympus had this.

Are ther anything else i can do to help myself?

One of the many things they deliberately left out to force you to buy a D80 later on. They call that differentiating the product line.

Well you will not get the D80 for the D40 price. It's the same as I would have liked the D200 but my budget was D80.

You wouldn't buy a city car and then complain that it didn't have hand stitched leather seats the same as a Rolls Royce.

You said that your horizons are not straight for nature shots did you mean landscape shots, if so put the camera on a tripod and put a spirit level on the top of the camera, that's how it's done.

It doesn't have grid lines for the same reason my D50 doesn't have grid lines, entry level DSLR.

Yes, i mean landscape shots.
Problem is, i am stubborn enough to switch to the D80 just because of this.
Except this minor thing, i am wery happy with my D40.

Found an easy way to fix this in photoshop though

Still think it's lousy of Nikon to not include such a "basic" feature.

Re: Why on earth doesn't D40 have Grid lines??

As far as I know if you put all the DSLR's that have grid lines in one pile and all the cameras that don't in another pile, the pile with grid lines would be a lot smaller.

So therefore it's not a basic feature.

Re: Why on earth doesn't D40 have Grid lines??

Nope. Composition grid lines are usually only found on enthusist level models. Entry level cameras usually don't have them from what I have seen at least. Now, the arguement could be made that someone looking to buy an entry level DSLR is an enthusist already, thus the gridlines should be an included feature. However, with all entry level products the manufactuer has to make trade-offs to get the product into the price range they have targeted. Grid lines seem to be one of those things that get cut since it would add to the viewfinder's or LCD's cost.

Gee, my cheap Casio has them. But for not a lot of money, you can put a different focus screen in that DOES have grid lines....

Differentiating products for reasons of pricing...

Adding Gridlines to a DSLR's LCD would not add the value one would need as it should be in the VF. Also adding lines to the LCD is not costly as the pixels are already there, one would just draw them in when programming. I doubt that adding them to the focusing screen would be an expensive option rather just another means of differentiating products for reasons of pricing.

Sorry, looking at my past post looks like I was being a bit of a smart a...s!

Horizons are a big issue with me too. My Fuji 602 and 9500 had them, grid lines that is, but as I have a D80, I don't have a big issue. If I do I correct them on the Mac in Iphoto, brilliantly simple.

Custom screen with grid lines?

One way to get grid lines in the D40 is to get a custom replacement screen, such as the Katz Eye and order it with grid lines to your liking. I would have gotten one myself if all of my lenses were fast, but after using a split screen on a D200 (loved both) with slow lenses I can tell you it is not fun. Only the "optibrite" version probably works well enough for me on slow (F5.6) lenses to not be a hindrance but it is $150 plus shipping... Not sure I'm ready for this, yet.

On the other hand, if your lenses are all F4 or faster and you do not routinely do 1:1 macro (lenses get dark there with small effective aperture), then even a cheap split screen would do, but unfortunately they do not come with grid lines as far as I know...

First I'll give it a burl as not to have to fix it in PP, but sometimes I'm glad that I can make it right despite. Leave it crook and you're a dag. Those gridlines sure are the ripper.

My D50 does not have the grid lines either so I just use the slots in the focus points for horizontal guides.
